Replacing the discs and pads on my son's Laguna estate and the rear disc / hub requires tightening with a 36mm socket to 280 Nm. My wrench only goes up to 210 Nm. Any suggestions on how to tighten ? Buy / hire a suitable wrench ? Hang a 14kg weight off a 2 metre breaker bar ?

I want to tighten this correctly and without damaging the assembly or having the wheel drop off.

Tighten it until you fart....then give it another quarter turn. That should do it:p

Why is the hub nut implicated in this disc and pad change?

If somehow it is...then I'd do it to 210 Nm. That's tight enough for any susp / brake application.

The Laguna rear disc / hub is a single unit which is secured to the stub / bearings with a big nut.

I'd have thought 280Nm would break your farting strings!

Set to 140Nm and do it twice

My father always said buying a tool is the added cost of doing a job yourself, one thing I agreed on.
Get someone else to do it or buy the right tool, you may need it again so buy at the quality you can afford and is right for you.
No point in buying top stuff if it's only going to be used once or twice.

Out the box answer, I'd do the job by hand and drive to my tyre fitter, get him to remove the wheel and torque the nut up to 280Nm.
They do trucks so I'm sure their kit would measure to 280Nm.
Bet he'd do it for a fiver or tenner at the most.

I would hazard a guess 210 plus an 1/8 of a turn will keep it on :D

Agreed.
It's BFN, I'm sure it would be hard to over tighten it.

Had a giggles today doing a nut to 125nm . Farted then remembered your saying but didn't bother with the extra 1/4 turn in case there was an accident :p

Use the same system we use in work , its all to do with the colour of your neck at maximum strain.

If you exceed Crimson Lake (around 250 ft/lb ) on the way to Deep Brown well lets just say you have squeezed a bit too much.

Most caravans have a one shot nut torqued to 280Nm, there might be a mobile servicing guy in your area who could torque it for you. Probably cheaper than a torque wrench(think I priced one at Halfords that could go that high for about £80)
