I was talking with another 211 face-lift 320CDI owner yesterday he said he had fitted the Brabus chip and whilst it was more powerful he had fitted it for economy reasons and was enjoying better fuel economy because of it and was now seeing 42mpg on the dash.

Was I wrong to show him mine...

If he was a policeman, yes, unless you were on a private road when you took that photo whilst moving.

On jacks with rear wheels in the air. Scientifically controlled conditions!

(Obviously motorway travel, for that average over that distance).

As a Brabus D6 owner I can tell you that I believe more power/more economy is an oxymoron.

If more power = more efficient use of fuel then a performance chip can give better economy for the amount of power actually used.

Back when Pontius was a pilot and I drove a 998cc Mini Cooper a good rolling road tune up gave me much more usable power (I was easily pleased back then) and much better fuel economy while commuting.

.

This could be so if you did drive with the same acceleration etc as the unchipped version, but that could be quite hard work to try and achieve

I would have thought that Mercedes (and pretty much every manufacturer) are already designing their engines to use fuel as efficient as possible otherwise the emissions would be poor.
More power = more fuel and air = worse fuel economy

So would I, but if I have understood correctly (and please feel free to put me right if I haven't) the C200 and C220 has the same engine, just a different map. The 220 gives better MPG and more power.

Seems the only reason to make the C200 is so that they can charge you £2500 more for the C220.

Even MB has to abide by EU regs when producing engines.

Readers of the 'Get rid of the EGR' posts will see that MB engines can be made more efficient with a few after-market tweaks.

This also makes interesting reading: http://www.tunit.co.uk/2010/

And here is one of the testimonials from the Tunit website...

"Paul Eslick

Had my tunit fitted same day I bought my new C4 especially noticed the increase in performance. Fuel economy can exceed 60mpg on a long run against mid 40s.

Citroën C4"

So, tuning kit fitted same day he bought the car, noticed a huge mpg increase on long runs?? How can that be?

You have to wonder...

I managed 47.3 mpg this morning going from Poole to Bluewater at a steady (ish) 70 mph. That is the most I have ever got. Happy with that as I had my 15" sub and some tools in the boot.
