Illegal plates?

If you spaced or "adjusted" your plates with carefullt positioned black-headed fixings, the ANPR might still read them, but read themm wrongly..

Do the ANPR readers check immediately that the correct car has the correct plates, or is this done later (or not at all)?

My impression is that they are check immediately. Most certainly the impression you get from the many TV Motorway Cop programs is that they are. We are to assume that they are factual ! :)

I guess it depends on the ANPR system, if it's traffic police they would check it out before pulling someone over.
Parking ANPR will issue fines based on the plate and who it's registered to, I'm sure they wouldn't check it matches the vehicle.

I spotted a range rover sport near the marina in Hull yesterday that had such a heavy tint on the front number plate that it was un-readable

I spotted a range rover sport near the marina in Hull yesterday that had such a heavy tint on the front number plate that it was un-readable

Difficult to read with the Mark1 eyeball but be perfectly readable in infra-red light :)
