For my 65th birthday I also bought my first MB, a 350SL, 2004 vintage. When I look at the depreciation on my wife’s and mine daily runners which were bought new in 2012 and 2015, I could’ve almost bought a new SL! Hopefully it’ll hold it’s price, but didn’t buy it as an investment just pure self indulgence! I’ll only sell it when I can no longer get out of it!

Lots of people ask about the mpg, my answer is about 30 smiles to the gallon! Actually returns about 31 mpg on a long run which isn’t bad for a 3.7 litre auto nearly two ton car

Mike

Lovely looking SL, agree new cars are expensive after depreciation, I find years 3 to 5 the best balance of reliability after most of the major depreciation has taken place % wise....

Yeah I know, great looking car. I did look at these before getting mine. For 265bhp the power is mental, I've never driven a car this quick on the roads before. A tag quicker than my old Insignia 130bhp company car. Did you post up some pics?

I'm 44, 45 next month and my car brings a smile to my face ever day! Good choice on the E class, the Coupe is very smart and SmartAMG, that is a very posh SL with particularly nice wheels. Definitely 30 (or much less) V8 'smiles' to the gallon but do we measure, no we don't cos' we like em' and that's that!

People always assuming powerful cars are thirsty but not always the case, on a run I get 30 mpg from a twin turbo 4.7l V8, because the engine is powerful it ticks over around 2000 rpm at 80 mph. In fact overall I am finding the SL500 to be the same as I used to get from my Jaguar S type which was a 3.0l v6. I only do around 8k a year so the annual fuel running cost difference between the SL and my previous Range Rover 2.2l diesel is only about £490. So I ask myself is it worth £400 to have a smile on my face each time I drive?
