My partner and I went out shopping last night and to cut a long story short he managed to catch the side of one alloy on the kerb. Now I know no one wants any damage on their car, but is it really such a big deal? Am I missing something here? I spent the whole evening listening to my partner cursing under his breath about how much it will cost to replace it! If they are so easy to damage is it worth replacing them? Surely in the bigger picture it's just a piece of stupid metal and so many other things are more important

Did the same on mine a couple of years back. You can't really see it but I know it's there. It's as much annoyance with oneself for having miss-judged the parking as the actual damage.

But it's also pride in ones car and no one wants to drive around in a car dented, scratched etc etc

So you damage a wheel, next week someone puts a dent in the side in Tesco's. A few weeks later your bumper gets scuffed, some kids scratch the bonnet and within no time the car has lost thousands and looks uncared for.

When you go out, you turn your self out totally immaculate, without 1 hair out of place, What would your husband do if you started going out say with a big scuff on one of your shoes, then a small tear in your coat, with us men its the same thing over our cars, its the start of a downhill spiral.

Only a piece of metal maybe, but the start of a downhill slide. Some of us feel ill every time we wash the car and see the scratch or kerb mark on a wheel, it all comes under the pride of what we own.

He can get the wheel fixed, and yes it hurts for ages, you had a bad night then:cry:

It can be more than just cosmetic, the damage can run deep!

I kerbed my C-Class about 6 weeks ago, as per your husband, cursed, got out, found no damage, so off I set. Since that time, vibrations set in and braking had a unnerving pulsing vibration! Cut a long story short, I popped into get Winter Tyres on Steel Rims last week, expecting them to say Id damaged a wheel bearing etc, but no, just the alloy rim! On the steel rims, the cars is very smooth, so will have to buy a new alloy for next summer!

Numerous comapanies will refurb an alloy wheel. An MB dealer should be able to give you contacts. £50 per wheel -or so. They use to spruce up the second-hand stock.

The problem is that we have a silly fashion in full swing with loads of men wanting bigger and bigger wheels and less and less tyre. So they Kerb easily.

I scoured the country to get an E estste with the smaller 16 inch wheels. More comfortable ride, less kerbing problems, better fuel economy, less emissions, better on snow and ice and less tendency to aquaplane.

Its still better to keep away from kerbs, as the tyre sidewall is the softest and weakest part of the tyre, one cut cord and it will fail the MOT. One see's motorist driving up and down kerbs and pavements where I live due to the narrow roads, if those people new of the damage that they are doing to the tyre and suspension components, I am sure that they would not. Just take a track /tie rod, they are 12mm in Ø, with say 1 ton plus the force they easily bend

i do get also a bit touchy when my flan hasn't risen properly
or people arnt filling the dishwasher properly
or pegs arnt taken in off the line
and knickers inside of discarded trousers when sorting the daily washing pile.
dont you think us blokes need something to be proud of..alloys they maybe

What is it about alloy wheels? I have steel wheels on my A150 Classic SE and it didn't cross my mind to pay extra for alloys. Is there some technical reason why alloys are better/sought after. Or is it just a cosmetic thing?

Now that the alloy & lacquer is damaged, moisture & salt from the roads will attack the wheel. Next year you will be looking at a wheel that looks 10 years older than the other three wheels.

I talk from experience:grin:

As the wife does not read this, I hope, I can tell you that she has kerbed 3 of my summer wheels & one of the winter wheels. First thing I did is to paint then lacquer over the damage to keep the moisture out. Hopefully this will keep them from oxidising until I get round to having them refurbished in the future.

Fantastic wheels Malcolm....it's funny how men and women have a different view on cars, my wife came into our drive last week and scraped the side of her Colt, I said about getting it fixed and she is not bothered...?? I like my cars to look mint....I do like those wheels Malcolm...and they was only a grand less than my SLK !!!

I have told you before, you are always welcome down here:D

Knowing that you live in such a beautiful part of the world I am very tempted ;)

I can't believe I misspelt alloy as allow, maybe someone can change it for me as I hate incorrect spelling and I don't seem able to change it

I've changed it Lyn

When will you be fitting the tyres?:D

When my pension comes:shock:,, Quickfit are still the cheapest by a mile, and are doing a further 30% on 4 tyres
