It has been said that MB knows best with what and when it comes to servicing, well if you look at it logically, whether you drive 2k miles or 15k within that year, MB say they want the car in after 1 year now when they used to wait 2 years. So this in nothing to do with engine oils etc or even many of the filters. Your brakes will not be worn out or much else for that matter, or have I missed something here

There are laws in the land now where people can be protected from this type of thing, but the right questions have to be asked in the first place, sadly people do not know, so they do not ask.

If we all took our cars to people like you where you say up front before the work starts and keep to that price, there would not be these threads.

My car was recovered into MB Chelsea's workshop on the 30 November 2005 and I was informed on the 6th of January the following year that I was expected to pay the invoice of £6,640; How does that work?

( ps. The Warranty was still in force!)

Oh, I don't know .... err - leaky water pump, low anti freeze level in the coolant or a fraying fan belt. All things that would lead to a breakdown and potentially greater expense if not caught early enough. You could argue that they should introduce an annual inspection rather than specifying a service but I guess whilst its in the workshop ....
And obviously there's the profit aspect.

None of the above fits into a 1 year old car that has been under 4k miles.

Conversation between the service in desk at my local.

Man with A class been under 4k miles, the man asks

"why has my car been called in for a service so soon, its been less than 4k miles and I bought it new last year"

Service guy.
" its a safety thing, we must check the car all over after 1 year"

Customer
"The car is in a heated garage what can happen then in that time"

Service guy.

" the brakes could be dangerous and we must check them"

Customer

"Are the cars made so badly that this is really necessary"

Service Guy

"No sir our cars are built to the highest standard in the world"

Customer.
" sorry I do not believe you, I will sell it and buy something else but not an MB"

He stood up and left, it is sick and only a money making scheme

Smart + others :)
Got an SL 500 in, and MB would not reset his service light because he refused to pay the price for brake fluid and gearbox oil and filter change. :(

My mother's car (Aclass) does about 3k miles a year. How often should it visit a workshop and wha twork should be done?

OK if it's not every year, what should be done and when?

They will want to change the oil and filter every year and other things will need changing as the mileage creeps round

Maybe I've misunderstood, but I thought the conjecture, which does have merit, is that annual servicing isn't required for a low (say 3k) annual mileage. If that's the case I was trying to establish what your service regime recommendation is for such a vehicle.

Maybe I am not following the question, but under the MB terms you take it in once a year even if you did no miles, or they will not stamp the book.

2 years is a reasonable time

well my other car- a w210 e320 thats done c 11,000 miles in its 10 years is 500+ days over its B service. As its done 400 miles over the last 3 years, I will live with the beeping when I put the key in the ignition and do the services myself.

The gist of this discussion seems to be that MB are ripping people who do a low annual mileage off when they, MB, stipulate an annual service.

Accepting that, what should the service interval be and what should be done at that service? If it's 2 years what jobs should be done every two years?
Should every 2 year sevice be the same or should there be extra things done at four years etc...?

Short answer is its a guess !

From a distance who knows wether your car lives in a garage or a field,
is it driven by a ham fisted moron, or a carefull owner, do you drive up the salt covered rust inducing motorway or get it out only when the sun shines.
If MB's servicing costs were reasonable then I imagine we wouldn't be discussing this.

I had the same thing though I was advised of the extra work needed when I rang to book it in namely a brake fluid and pollen filter change. I asked if they could just do the B service without the additional two items and I will get them done myself. They said that would be fine but they wouldnt stamp my book and I would lose the mobilio cover!

I also only do low mileage but the car will call for a service every year as it is time based. I guess even with low mileage you should really have the oil changed yearly anyway.

Check your manual you can reset the service indicator yourself or it will be posted here somewhere i guess.
