Maybe check if there was a ski pack option on your car.
That provided a hole though the back of the rear cubby into the boot.
It MIGHT indicate there is nothing in the way, like a petrol tank or wires!

The fridge option had a removable hatch that allowed the fridge to be installed behind the armrest. I'm fairly sure this involved a different boot panel, not cutting a hole in the original.

It requires a different rear seat bulkhead and different fuel tank. I looked into it for my 215 (same structure). It’s possible but is an ENORMOUS job.

Pity the ski pack option wasn't standard. Really useful with a fixed rear seat.

With the 'L' (Long Wheelbase) version of the W221 you don't need a ski pack. 3 sets of skis easily fit in the cabin without encroaching on passengers. btw the rear seats are not fixed, the outers move individually.

To the OP, there may well be electrical bits in the panel. Individual rear seat operation, heating, cooling, headrests, rear window blind and from a diagram Malcolm sent me once, a board for towing electrical connections.
