I had a very scary situation last night when my ML320 cut out on a busy roundabout! We managed to push it to the hard shoulder and figure out what was wrong. The fuel gauge showed a tad below 1/4 full, and the fuel warning light had just come on, more or less as it cut out. I managed to get 5L of diesel with the help of a very helpful passing police officer which put the gauge up to a tad over 1/4 full. The car the restarted once it has pulled more fuel through, and has been OK ever since. Needless to say, I filled up at the next service station. I only purchased the car 2 days ago, and hadn't filled up at all. A brief read through various postings suggests that this is not a new issue, but what is the solution? The dealer will get the sharp end of my tongue next week after I've had a full check up done on the car. Issues so far apart from the gauge are a noisy passenger side wing mirror when it is moved in or out, and CD multichanger that won't let me put any CDs in.

Maybe you should have checked the last two things before you handed over your hard earned cash

Quite right! I did give it a pretty thorough look at but didn't have a CD with me. Hands up, the noisy mirror should have been picked up.

I know there's a tolerance between individual cars, but my ML will do at least 30 miles after the low-fuel warning light comes on..

I ran out of bottle after that and filled-up!

As Steve says.... and, what about a knackered HP Pump which sees one side of the fuel tank completely empty while the other is reading a quarter full. Happened to me a few years back. If I remember, the EPC light showed up on the dash but putting more fuel in solved the problem until it was a quarter full at which point it cut out again.
