Not too bad, lasted until 170K before it went Bang, But i am one for servicing so perhaps that helped. Auto-Boxes are always going to be troublesome though, i do prefer a manual any-day.

I have autos since the 60s hundreds of them, only one failed at 100k.
90% + of MBs are auto so there will always be a few on here.

How many 15+ year old daily drivers with a couple on hundred thousand on original manual boxes do you see? Although manual Mercs are so rare it's difficult to make a like for like comparison.

My old 307D was bought at approx 4yrs old with about 80k on the clock and I drove it till it had 370k on it 11 years later i.e 15 yrs old. It always was a bit crunchy from 1st to second and 2nd to 3rd if rushed but never showed any other problems. I did change the oil in it once with regular EP80/90 before I ever knew about Mercs habit of developing specific oils to their own requirements and this made no difference. Great old van, it was doing 30kpa right upto the day I drove it up to dronsfields and sold it as scrap (terminal cab corrosion and the unquenchable desire to drive one of them sprinter rocket thingies)

Ahhhh No no i wasn't debating reliability i just normally prefer a manual as i like to choose my gears, where i think really, oil changes etc are the key thing to do with a G/box. On a Merc yes, definitely i prefer an Auto, but on others a Manual is much better
