Failed Mot mechanic said

Front to rear at rear (whatever that means) brake pipe excessively corroded [3.6.B.2c]
Offside rear brake pipe excessively corroded [3.6.B.2c]

the mechanic says the pipes are metal and need to be made and cant be bought. Is this correct? Are there any enthusiasts out there who make the pipes to order. I thought you you could just order them

You can buy them complete, but the exhaust and rear sub frame has to be removed, others have bought kits and just replace the rust sections.

Some times they look afar worse than what they really are, a light sand will show the depth of any pitting.

Ring up your friendly MB parts department or any competent garage will make and fit some for you.
Or clean and waxoyl them if they are not to bad.

Mercedes will supply the pips if you want to replace as is, but the component that I said will have to be removed in order to fit them.

You could do a search on here as there are loads of threads on this including making your own.

I think most garages will have a coil of brake pipe and a flaring tool to form the ends on the pipe. If you've not made brake pipes up before it might be best getting a garage to do the job.

thankx, what do I ask for when ordering? I mean the specific name?

Motorfactors will sell rolls of brake pipe and the associated fittings. Best policy is to remove old pipe, take it with you & say ....''I want one of these'' ;) Bear in mind there are a couple of different types of end fitting which are not interchangeable.

The thing is, if you have to ask, you might be better taking it to a garage to sort out. As Malc says, removing the pipe you want isn't straight forward so a repair sounds to be the better option.

I did that years ago and was a bit thrown that the pipe I got back was straight and I had to bend it myself to fit!

I bought some from Mercedes dealer for a few pounds a few years back.

All made up and exact size for each section - all I need to is bend to shape.

I cannot think of an easier way.

Do they come with fitments to connect and there is not cutting involved? How much were they from Mercedes mate

They were complete with all end fittings for joining, attached.

Just unbolt old, and bolt on new.

Need to carefully bend to shape where required.

Would need to look up cost for three pipes, but remember two prices:

* £3.98p

* £11.58p

Cannot remember longest pipe price.

Give full VIN to parts person.

Order on Tuesday, collect on Thurs.

(Delivered to branch from Milton Keynes warehouse).

Just a heads up for Tam as it seems your new to brake pipes??

To change the pipes you'll need to do the following-
Jack the car up high enough to be able to get right under it.
Support it on axle stands or other strong and steady blocks so its safe to work underneath.
Identify the correct pipes- see your original post.
Drain all the old brake fluid out of the system by undoing a fitting, bleed nipple or cutting the pipe so you can drain the fluid into a container.
On the long run from front to rear draw a chalk line next to the pipe to remind you of the correct route if you are not sure.
Disconnect and remove old pipe
Thread in new pipe, which may be easier said than done!! Remember that the pipes work harden so avoid bending and restraightening again excessively.
Bend to shape. As the pipes are made to the exact length you'll need to follow the original route fairly closely or the pipe will be short at the end. If you bend too tight and kink the pipe you'll need to get another one as the kink will be weak.
Keeping the ends very clean, reconnect both ends of the pipe.
Refill system with brake fluid and bleed. Probably worth checking all bleed nipples are free before you start so you dont end up with new pipes and no way to get the air out!!

Have fun!

Think will just go with this option, its the easiest one. Fitting should be pretty simple me thinks

If you've not changed a pipe before, easiest option is take it to a local garage who have a ramp and experience.

Phoning MB, ordering the pipes and paying £16 is the easy bit- fitting them might not be so straight forward.

Good luck if you go for it.
