Colt, we did have snow, all gone now. But I'm sure it will return, this year or next..... and yes the best time to get winter tyres is in the summer.
I always do my best to get into work, no matter what. winter tyres, checking the weather, leaving ****** early and a well maintained car is all that is in my control.

i think everyone agrees that winter tyres are a massive improvement. most of the comments are about getting traction, this can be frustrating, BUT it is not nearly as scary as sliding down a gradeant, even with snow tyres if you get a frozen wedges of snow between your tyres and the road, you just slide, it's a terrible experience, especially if you are approaching a junction or a bend with a drop down to a river below. i actually enjoy driving in snow, BUT the sliding bit can only be avoided with the studded tyres. i have a sports car and a big merc with the big wide tea tray tyres, they are both layed up and i am using the wife's corsa, it's great, no probs, just have to be sure that down hills are salted, don't want the dreaded slide. herbiemercman.

been driving through similar depths of snow without issue with winter tyres. apart from losing the undertray without realising & mangling the brackets in the process!

Been out today with snow chains for the first time. They were fantastic. Just me and the big 4x4`s were the only ones moving loved it:lol:

My 124 coupe is absolutely useless in the snow. It's running on 245/40 r17 Michelin tyres, on a tiny incline it will stay in situ and spin the wheels even without touching the accelerator. It was off the road for the entire duration of the last spell of snow and, it will stay off the road for this spell too. I have a Beamer which has no problems in the snow, I had to drive 240k in a blizzard the other week and never once did it refuse to cooperate. It has summer tyres on it which took everything in their stride (I think that they're Goodyear Eagles 245/40 r18). I still prefer the coupe though, great when it moves.

Went to B&Q and got three bags of building sand chucked into the boot.
been taking off ESP and pulling away in 2nd off the drive and seem to be having no problems now.
Still cant wait for the white stuff to go though.

But seriously, I've had no problems with my C220 Cdi, it's running on standard sized 205mm Continental Contact Sport 2's, ESP on and constantly in Winter mode on the autobox.

They are quite a narrow tyre compared to many that are fitted to some of the bigger Mercs on here.

My Transit Connect FWD is fitted with Dunlop SP2 (C) it's carrying a fair bit of weight mind, but, that too has had no problems as yet in snow.

It's fair to say, I'm sure though, that, it's the hard ice that's the problem for anyone, even with chains! Then the next option must be spikes!

FWD is better purely because when you have to stop you have less chance of locking the front wheels, its the RWD that suffer the hardest.

When it comes to braking, whether its FWD or RWD, once the clutch is depressed the front brakes are exactly the same.

thats it you see, you should keep the clutch off for as long as possible stopping the wheels from locking ;), after all you dont do an emergency stop with the clutch in :p

RWD is better than FWD for going up hills - more weight on rear.
