A customer nearly got conned last week :( We see it quite often, scumbags.
I saw a pic recently, where this had been done and he got a plastic bottle to fit to the filler hole of the header tank, filled it with water and the oil rose to the top of plastic bottle above the tank.

I don't think these scumbags were quite as tidy them filling the coolant bottle, as I noticed black oil spillage on top of the coolant bottle before he asked me to remove the cap. (in last photo) I remember thinking to myself, that is odd, and when I saw the coolant inside, the penny dropped. They were triers though and not nice with it. I didn't let on that I suspected something was wrong. I just said 'car not for sale now' That's when all the BS started as one of the scumbags was a mechanic and it needed this doing and that doing and £8500 to fix, then he had the cheek to say to me after I said. 'No problem I pulled out engine and send it to my mechanic friend' Oh he said, now you are mechanic'.......The so called mechanic, wasn't a mechanic because he only knew the basic, head cracked from sitting 2 weeks can happen on both heads..................... Little do they know.
I'll head up to the workshop today and carry out header tank and water removal procedures. I well still send it to Giles after this has been done, OMG it is 274 days over service
We keep you posted.

Sorry to hear this!

Makes you feel lucky nowadays if you get genuine buyers as I did for the S212 mind you it wasn’t a SL55.

Hope you get it sorted without any drama

Had a sales incident with some of our fake gypsy travelling friends.

Advertised tipping trailer and undervalued it, phone ringing off the hook,
so first men to arrive told them I would take the hit and sell at advertised price.

They agreed and then started the give me some money back for luck routine so I gave them the lot back and told them I would sell it to someone else, they weren't impressed.

Then the threats started, which I found amusing that didn't please them, I said I'm here now if you want to try so lots of huff and puff and they went.

That night got brick through window of house and saw one running down the road.

I knew where they were and "a visit was arranged" but that was then and now I ain't up to such nonsense.

Why some people live like this defeats me.

Sorry to hear this @00slk :(. Sounds like it's pretty easy to sort. You said there was water in the filler cap, does this mean they poured water into the engine ? Can you check the oil for water before driving it ? Sorry if I'm a bit confused.com

Thanks guy's.
I was talking to another friend of mine, he had this too. It is so pravilant. Looks like we need 4 big blokes to help you with selling privately now.
I am going to use auctions, dealers, friends and forum members now for selling.

Agree, even though you get less part exchanging or WBAC or auctions or the likes, it's pretty much trouble free. Selling private as you've unfortunately found out,
can be a pain in the @rse.:(

No up date yet unfortunately. My son arrived at 8am this morning to work on the campervan so we can go away Easter. We estimated a few hours to set the rear bed back to it correct height, then head up to be workshop to work on the 55. Well 9 hours later the bed lowering is 99% done. Now the Missus I can get onto the bed without a step stool. It turned into a major job as the previous owner had made a right mess.
But fare not, the Missus and I will be going to the 55 first thing tomorrow morning.

******s

I had similar when selling my sisters ford galaxy a few months back. She tried selling it herself and got all excited saying various ppl agreed to buy it.

I said update the advert and put my contact details because i read of all these scams.

3 Romanians (sorry to offend) turned up. One popped hood, one walking round back. twat under the hood punctured a a coolant hose. Twat walking around saying all shocks gone. They wanted a test drive - i said give me your driving licence and passport. They got very anxious. Went for teat drive - your turbo is dead and running on 3 cylinders they say.

Now i look after my sisters car and always have. there is me thinking here we go.

Its an old 07 galaxy. was listed at 750. My brother i help you - we buy now for 200 cash - we need now my father is old and perfect for him.

I said with all the faults you need to spend 1k to put it right. No brother I am a mechanic he says. I said you told me you are car salesmen.

Car not for sale any longer i told them. If they want it they pay the 750. They got really stroppy and effed off.

1) you need to be streetwise with these fools. 2) once you know their game turn the tables and pee them off. 3)its so hurtful such shameless people exist 4) worrying as they know your address.

I sold the galaxy a week later for 850.

Keep smiling OP you are a better person!

You can see why so many use these car-selling sites.

I have never heard of them messing around like the above.

They do though rely on accurate owner's appraisals which as we all know vary dramatically.

There is one of the porta cabin type buildings for one of them in a garden centre car park and they get a very varied selection of cars, some a bit off, others absolute gems.

Private sales are a hassle and so many various scams. I recall when i went to see a Lexus is200 years ago and the seller demanded i bring cash… when folks would get jumped and cash robbed.

Had many calls where as a buyer or seller I didn’t get with the other party or, they just made it difficult so didn’t even get to seeing the car stage.

However, I still prefer private deals and when it goes well, it’s bliss for both. I think now sadly everyone has to be firm and be ready to turn folks away on the spot of it doesn’t feel/look right.

For the OP, how is the repair going?

Good news @DSK :) Took the Missus with me to assist with the header tank removal (she stood ready with the oil drain container) and she did a stirling job. Not a drop of old black engine oil dropped. With the container at the ready, the header tank was evicted in great haste and only coolant started to pour out at first, but then came the black cr*p...................

20240326_082846.jpg

I let the header tank hose drop a bit to loose the coolant but noticed it was only coolant and no contaminates, which was lucky I thought. So plenty of coolant over workshop floor, which was duly mopped up by my lovely assistant

:D
The header tank was emptied and found to be reasonably clean. I have flushed out the header tank when I got back, also have recovered the 55 back home and it will have to sit now until April 4 when it is booked into to LG Motor Services for a complete going over and full engine and transmission service.

I did start the car to just to make sure it hadn't developed any unusual problems, but all sounded fine.
After it was on the back of my lorry, I notice the scumbags had also poured oil engine oil into the exhausts. I wonder if they would have carried out their terrorist attack on the 55 if I had told them, I was a mechanic, they did ask me twice, once on arrival and secondly when they saw the workshop. I said no. Lesson learned here.

Glad you've managed to start sorting it. Unfortunately it's a scam that's been happening for years and easy to fall prey to. It was tried on a few years ago to friend of mine. There were 4 of them involved and tried to intimidate the guy. Unfortunately they hadn't realised he had his rugby league team mates round to watch a match and they all came dashing out when they heard the commotion and chased the gang away, booting the slowest escapee in the arse. If you can it's always a good idea to have at least one other bloke with you when you're selling a car privately.

Certainly had a chuckle when you mentioned the kick, bet he was called 'The Boot' after that :D

I was hoping to get away without servicing the 55 before I sold it.
It is booked in for a complete engine and transmission service.........Oops I better let Giles know this, it was booked in only for a coolant and engine flush
Oh, and I guess I better let him know that I need to have the brakes bled on Star as well. It has been suffering from sponginess since the new brake hoses were fitted a few years ago

Sorry to hear that you had this hassle. It's because of this sort of con, plus time wasters who just want to drive a car that they can't afford to buy or insure, that I sold my last car through CarWow - hassle free, quick and got more for it than expected.

I sold the Missus car through Motorway, no hassles....Well, just a little with trying to send all the photos they keep asking for. However, it was worth it in the end. The Missus wasn't best please. She didn't know until I told her to take my car today o_O

violence is not the answer but sometimes its needed, this happened to a gym buddy a few years ago, he went nuts and made them give him money back to put the car right, they wont be bothering him again.
