Hi I don;t ave a manual for my van so I want to know what the best oil for my R reg Sprinter 312D is. I am running on vegtable oil but fully converted so it shouldn't be a problem but something that has a bit of extra resistance to polymerisation would be a bonus.
Also I have only really changed the oil on **** things that i didn't really care a toss about before so I just want to check a few things-

Do i pour it all in at once until its up to the max or do it gradually

do i need to pour any oil into the oil filter bit or can i simply remove the old one and put the new one in?

and I have read a little about people using diesel to flush the engine out is htis advisable or should i just pay for the 'propper' engine flush stuff?

and finally does anyone know how much oil I will need?

Thanks, Bill

Hi Bill.

First Engine Oil Grade = 15W/40 semi synthetic

How To:
Remove sum plug (replace copper washer on your sump plug when putting back) and drain.

Remove your oil filter (when putting your new oil filter back-on put a smear of oil around the oil filter seal, makes it easier to change next time)

When your filter and plug are tightened up, add your oil takes 9.5 litres. (No need to top up your oil filter before putting back on ) Start the engine and run for a minute and check the dipstick. Should be spot on.

How tight should the sump plug be ? = 25 Nm same goes for the Oil Filter.

Hope that helps

ok thanks, can I or should i go lower onthe oil weight like 5w-40 or is it not necessary? and whats 25N translate to when i'm using 10" or so long ratchet? doa ll seals for the filter housing come with the oil filter or do i need to get them seperatley? and does the crush washer for the sump plug need ot eb got from merc or will any copper washer from a hardware shop do?
Also is it worth flushing the engine? I have heard it can cause problems for older engines by removing bits of gloop that are helping crappy seals or rings and gaskets seal up correctly etc. the van has done 153k anyone got any advice on weather it is wise to flush it or not, or just keep changing the oil regulalry?

Thanks, Bill

Hi Bill, we get plenty of Sprinters with that kind of milage through the doors and personally have never flushed any of them, just recommended regular oil changes. Also have always used 15W/40 semi synthetic which is recommended by mercedes for your vehicle.

The oil filter seals will come with filter, or they should do when ordering from mercedes.

You may be able to get the copper washer from a hardware store, to be honest have never tried as I just order what I need from mercedes, and it's always wise to change it.

Tightening the oil filter (nip it up) so it doesn't leak. The sump plug just nip up, so it doesn't leak, you don't have to hang off your wratchet to get it tight :)

Hope that helps

I could only find 10w/40 semi synthetic diesel oil so i bought that, I guess that'll be better than 15w/40 and it said suitable for most turbo diesels on it, so will that be ok?

Hi Bill,

Personally I only put in what Merecdes recommend, and haven't tried any other grade, so I can't really say whether you should or not, Sorry I couldn't have a better answer for you. If your not to far away from the Wolverhampton area you could have popped in and collected what you need, for reference we charge £25 for 9.5litres.

I'm probably being a pussy here but does the oil filter caphave a left handed thread? As I ave put a fair bit of fore into it anti clockwise and it hasn;t budged, and being plastic I don;t wanna give it too much welly if i am doing it the wrong way.
