Hi.

I use 5/40 synthetic on my 230e (1992 84k miles.)

I guess it depends on the condition of the engine, and how you Drive.
personally I always use the the synthetic oil the engine runs much more freely, and I get more mpg. From hafords if you buy a 5ltr you get a litre free. bargain @ £25.

Ps if you have any oil leaks they will leak a bit more with the thinner synthetic. but the valves never tap first thing in the morning on startup.

I think you should spend the extra £££'s on synthetic oil. Despite the minor increase in any leaks, these motors are designed to use synthetic and will last a very long time if regularly serviced with the correct oil. You'll notice an improvement in oil pressure and startup, and this equates to reduced engine wear. Cheap oils are never a good investment.

I use Valvolene Durablend (synthetic blend) SAE10-40, purchased from my local motor factor for the princely sum of approx £12 for 5 liters :D .
I try to do an oil filter change every 5k miles, always with a proper Mercedes filter. I also use a branded engine flush with every other change.

I could use fully synthetic Valvolene from the same vendor; I seem to remember it being £15 for 4 liters :D . I don?t because I change my oil frequently & cannot justify the extra expense with my car having done 250k.

Mobil 1, I personally think is over priced & over rated, but I know that lots of people like it! For those who do, a good source for is at a Costco warehouse, they sell it for around £30 (+VAT) last time I even bothered to look at it in Halfords it was £50!!!

Oh & since I have mentioned them (Nick, no disrespect) I cant remember ****** Halfords being a world leader with their lubricants!

Thats it, my hapenny worth
cheers

I used Mobil 1 0-40 on my old C180 but it seemed too thin, it had a faint tappet noise when cold which became more apparent after the 0-40. I've now replaced it with a E220 (same 111 engine) and wonder if the Mobil Motorsport 15-50 would be better suited for this type of engine?

C180 - 148,000 miles
E220 - 80,000 miles

Post oil change, I can confirm that a very small oil leak has stopped, and the car is running as sweet as a nut!

I found my engine i little noisey on my E300TD 1998 i checked the oil condition and found it to be quite thick and black even though it was seviced at MB 5000 miles ago.so i used engine flush and used the ford oil 10w/40 semi syn oil and what a change. The engine noise went and got a little more miles to the gallon(did MB change the oil on the last service)?????????,
ps the Ford oil can be used in petrol/diesel/turbo engines

Cheers Derek,
I found the same, I used synthetic vauxhall oil, cracking stuff.
Mike.

I reckon they omitted to change your oil at the last service.

The MB dealer would have definately changed the oil but possibly not used a flushing agent, some do some don't!

If no flush was performed then the oil will be black and gungy within 5000 miles.
I have recently changed my oil and filter, flushing the engine with a seperate flushing oil in the process. The engine is definately quieter and seems to be more responsive.

This probably sound like rubbish to some on the list but I did post last year relating to a knocking noise which I put down to combustion. Although the noise did abate after checking EVERYTHING and having the injectors tested, there was still a very slight undertone at certain times when idleing.

I put this down to a partially sticking hydraulic valve lifter that is now free to operate properly.

I am a firm believer in flushing and have seen only positive results.

Incidentally you like MB have used a universal oil, which will soot up more quickly compared to a diesel specific oil. You can always tell a diesel specific oil because it says "Not suitable for petrol engines" on the can.

If available try Millers XFD. It comes out more slippery than most oils go in, and is MB228.3 approved.

Mike,

GSF (German, Swedish and French) have a branch in Bristol and they sell Total Quartz 9000 Fully Synthetic 5 litres for £17.50. That's about a tenner less than it costs at the garage, and it's good oil. I've used it in my cars to good effect. I agree with the comment about Mobil 1, it's overpriced, and IMHO too thin. My Jag actually lost a little oil pressure on Mobil 1.

PS I have no affiliation with GSF, they are just a good parts supplier. See http://www.gsf.com , I have had good dealings with them but they won't ship fluids to you because of the regulations for handling inflammables in transit.
