S - Class
Hey my name is Simon, I am based in London and I’d class my self as a lover of the older Mercedes models particularly the w140. A friend of mine recently traveled to the the west midlands, to a town called Tipton to visit family and he spotted a home that had both a w140 and s600l parked on the drive (he knows I’ve been on the look out for both lol).

I know it’s a long shot but I was wonder if anyone had the contact details for the guy, as I’m really interested in knowing if he’s willing to sell.

The W140 is often overlooked these days. I went from a W126 500SE (standard length) to a W140 500 L (long wheelbase) and found it a different league of smoothness as well as a generation on. Huge and heavy but magnificent. These cars were built without compromise so I can see why some claim that Mercedes pitched too high and lost money on them. It was certainly in a very different league to the E class at the time. They wound things back a bit, reducing size and weight again for the W220, still a great car but more closer related to it's E class brother (W210)

They most certainly did not lose money on them. It’s much easier to make profit on big expensive cars than small cheap cars. Fun fact, there’s not as much difference in the materials costs between different cars as you may think, but there will be a huge difference in the selling price…

The 220 was an unusual one, it was the first time that an S Class sedan was planned to be smaller than it’s coupe or tourer counterparts. It turned out to be a not terribly wise decision that was then fixed in the 221.

The W215 being the coupe counterpart to the W220...is smaller than the 220. Not sure if I understand you.

Sorry. I should have said, not noticeably bigger. The W220 is 46mm longer than the C215.
