My dad bought a really good condition 'K' plate 190E 2.0 Auto a while ago. It's not the sexiest colour combination around (gold, with the for want of a better description, light corn coloured interior) it suits him fine.......

What want to know is why is the 190E classified differently from the e-class at that time? Are they different cars? WHat is the difference between Dad's car and a 200E (if sucha thing exists)?

Thanks in advance

The 190 became the C Class so, yes, they're different cars

A 200E would, most likely, be an E Class. A K-plate 200E would be a 2-litre W124 (E Class) saloon - if they ever built such a model

The W124 officially became the E Class roundabout the time of the launch of the C Class (1993?) so MB then had all their model designations in sync

The E suffix relates to fuel injection, not a model designation. In the W124 (which a K reg 200E would have been), the numbers accurately relate to the engine size (note, other models before and after don't always accurately relate). The larger model is the S class, and they all had designations like 280SE, 380SE, etc.

The 190 was a new class of car for Mercedes - a smaller car. I think a 190 is around a foot or so shorter than a W124. The 190 in this case, doesn't relate to engine size, its just a model 'name'. Think of the 190 as similar size to a BMW 3 series, the 'E class' equivalent to the 5 series and the S class equivalent to the 7 series.

So, in 1992, just considering the saloons, 190 was a model, the 'E-class' was not really named, just identified by model numbers which related to engine size; and the S-class all had numbers then an S.

When I started typing this, I thought I could clearly explain it. Now I've reached this point, I've realised that Mercedes' model names/numbers at the time were a mess.

Different cars all together the 190 is the smallest in the range for that year then it was the E class the E on the 190 stood for injection where as the E on the E class stood for the model so don’t be confused between a 190 E and a E 200

All true- all fuel-injected Mercs had the E designation after the model/engine. The E represents the German for injection (einspritzer).
When the new line of Mercs were launched in the mid nighties the E was dropped.

When the C-class was born, the 190 went out and the 124 became the E-class, and the E moved to before the model/engine size badge on the 124 cars just to confuse everyone.

A lot of people confuse the 190E for the E class. The 124 and the 201 (190) chassis share a lot of common parts- the 190 was almost a scaled-down version of the 124. The 190 was only made in saloon versions though.

Hi Seeker,

Are you also around the 7 Series Register?

This site will give you the full spec on your dad's car. Sounds like smoke silver with oatmeal or light brown interior.

Thanks for all the help guys ('n' gals).

I was on the 7 series register but having a 1994 740i costing what it was to keep on the road lost its appeal.

I'm currently hooning around in a Saab 9000 Aero but I'm keeping my eye in here 'cos I'll be on the lookout in the new year for a W124 300CE a 'sport' C class. I just can't get on with that front wheel drive torque steer .......

I know what you mean. I bought a E32 735iL just for a change but sold it after only a couple of mths. Too big, terribly thirsty (17 mpg) & I hated the front end wobble which they all seem to develop. Went back to the 190Es I've had such good results with.

The 190E seems a bit 'tinny' after having the big BMs.

That said, should a nice 2.3 or 2.5 16V one appear for sale...........

A w124 300CE is an E class coupe. It was later renamed circa 1993 and subsequent models names were changed to Exxx coupe, ie E320 coupe etc.
