hello all have a bit of a problem with my old girl she has developed a transmission noise and the best i can describe it is like a hard object being spun around in a washing drum. personally i think it is terminal and a recon g/box may be required. my usual garage cannot fit me in untill the end of the month but i want to get her on the road before then. can anybody recomend a garage in the northamptonshire/bedfordshire area?

thanks

this is the problem i am finding nobody local to me seems to specialise in auto boxes!! and i am very distrusting of garages i do not know!! all i want is an honest opinion to weather it is terminal or fixable!! i do not mind spending the money but only if needed and they do not bodge it up!!

Does it bang in neutral when static or only in drive? It might be the torque convertor and not the actual gearbox. If it only does it when moving it may be a severely sick propshaft. These will cost less than a complete gearbox.

only when in drive and gets worse the more it is loaded!! nothing in neutral? i thought propshaft but they normally judder or you feel them as the uj flexes when it should not. need to get her in the air to check the prop over first i guess. ****** shame weather is great and i cannot drive her!!

As Wireman, some more details is the noise in N, or only in D have you tried coasting.

The Stevens one in the link is in North London been used 3 times by members about 50 miles from you

So the fault is within the gearbox, thats for sure now as you have done all of the test.

Well you are not going to belive this, i got her recovered to a garage they already had a car on the bed so towed her (with the rear in the air) the mech took her out for a test drive and...........nothing sounds normal changes perfect oil i clear kick down working fine nothing wrong that they can find! so they sent the head tech out (they know me and know i have an idea on how things work) he came back and said the same!!
the only conclusion they can come to is it picked up some debris and when they towed her back it dislodged clearing the fault!!
very strange i had money on the fact it was terminal, but they are saying it is fine!!

That's good news, if this is the case then it would be a good idea to have the oil and filter changed.
