Hi, I am new to this club but have been an MB owner of various models for nearly 20 years and have recently acquired the above 1992 SL. I bought this at auction without understanding some of the pitfalls and yes the head gasket had gone along with the OVP relay, the Idle air control valve, viscous fan and various other bits.
To cut a long story short I managed to get it running sweetly last summer and it recently let me down with the symptoms of a failed IAC valve, ie will not run at tickover. The following day it ran fine.
I have read about the state of the wiring looms of cars this age and this is my question does anyone repair these?

Try Sileck - they rebuild your loom. Takes a couple of weeks and its best if you pre-book it in for them to do.

Although if yours is a 300-24 you should have ke jet injection so I don't think you will have wiring loome issues..

You don't have the infamous disintegrating loom. Still worth having a look, old stuff can deteriorate.

If you do find problems I doubt it'd be the whole loom though, so look @ a local repair.

Thanks for the updates, which models are affected by the loom issue?

I will explore the local repair option.

I seem to recall it was MY 1993 onwards models (certainly true of the V8s).
If yours is a late 92 it may be affected?

Easiest way to check is to look at any exposed part of the loom and check for exposed wiring or crumbling insulation. The usual places for it to fail are in hot zones (around the head so check the temperature sensor wiring - its where the issue is obvious on my V8).

It's models with the new injection system, which yours isnt, so the 280 and 320 models (and yes the v8s and v12s too).
Yours is essentially a 24v m103

As Rob says biodegradable harnesses for the 6 cylinder models came in on the HFM 2.8/3.2 engines.
