I'm having real difficulty in locating an authentic replacement top for my baby.

thread on another forum - http://www.mbclub.co.uk/forums/showthread.php?t=26860

A précis of my findings over the last 6 months:

Canvas was originally manufactured by Haartz and is their Sonnenland product http://www.haartz.com/Product_Lines/Wcpl_Main_Page.htm

Rear flex-glass was manufactured by Gurit called 'Wopavin' http://www3.gurit.com/auto/products_wopavin.php. Its thickness is 1.5mm for the rear quarter sections and 1.25mm for the rear centre.

I have spoken to Gurit directly and they have informed me that NO UK soft top manufacturers take the correct thickness Wopavin - there one can assume that all hoods manufacturerd in the UK are not authentic!

Soft top cost from Benz £2000 inc VAT
Cost for fitting at Benz £1850 inc VAT

There are many alternative hood manufacturers but they often either: don't use Wopavin; use Wopavin but only at 1mm thickness for both sections; or use Ultralite BUV (US manufacturered material from Polyone Corp) .

The replacement hoods are all around £500

My goal is to find a manufaturer who replicates the hood with the most detail and uses Sonnenland and Wopavin at the correct thickness.

Here's the simple soft top criteria:

1. Must use Wopavin flex-glass at 1.5mm and 1.25mm thickness for rear quarter and centre plastic

2. Flex glass must be stitched

3. Must use Sonnenland canvas (or send me a sample to review)

4. Must have piping around the edges

5. Preferable to have the rubber strip that runs horizontally across the canvas between the front and rear sections.

Here are the companies I have reviewed:

Aresma GmbH
Eurotop GmbH
GAHH (US)
Prestige Auto (UK)

None of the above meet the min requirements or simply refuse to reply to email when asked about their hood materials and construction! so just wondering if anyone can suggest alternative manufacturers?

I'm specifically interested if anyone could post a couple of snaps if you have had your hood replaced recently - would be much appreciated.

Cheers
Lea

You sound as fussy as I was with my 129, but I do not blame you, a poor roof looks awful.
One of the best fitters in the UK is M & M trimming in Watford, Herts, he is very good and had a 129 until recently.

I think that the site Myros mentioned is a good one, he too knows these cars well.

Thanks for the tips guys.

Just sent the standard email:

Dear Sirs

My vehicle is a Mercedes 500SL R129 1993, with dark blue canvas and beige herringbone backing. I’m particularly interested in purchasing a complete soft-top from you but would like to confirm the following beforehand:

1. Is the rear window flex-glass material Gurit ‘Wopavin’ at 1.5mm and 1.25mm thickness for the side and centre windows respectively?

2. Are the windows sewn in or heat-welded?

3. Is the canvas genuine German Sonnenland-dralon manufactured by Haartz?

4. Is the hood identical to the original in pattern ie, does it have the piping around the edge; has it the flat hard edges that sit on the body work; has it the same recesses for the cables; does it have the small black rubber running horizontally on the roof, etc?

5. Is it possible for you to email/post a selection of pictures of the hood?

6. Please quote cost and delivery to the UK for a complete soft top

Have spotted this company in the past but must have forgotton it somewhere in my 6 months of suffering! Thanks Myros.

Maybe I am too fussy, but surely before purchasing a product I have the right to know what I'm purchasing - they simply don't want to say. Can you really believe none of these manufactures have a quality picture they could send - bazaar!

I'll let you know...

I have the unfortunately feeling I'm going to have to purchase from Benz....

Hi all

Many thanks for your posts and advice.

After 6 months it's now really started to heat up with KHM as my current choice meeting ALL the requirements.

As I've cross posted on to multiple forums and so I need to minimise the updates, so for those interested you may find my review of hood manufacturers and (rating) of interest:

http://www.mbclub.co.uk/forums/showpost.php?p=280640&postcount=100

Red SL - A big thank you for any information you can provide about the hood you purchase, although maybe worth just hanging on for 2-3 weeks as hopefully within this time frame well have a definitive choice of manufacturer. Pictures and your comments are welcomed with open arms.

Cheers
Lea

Hi Malcolm

Nope. I carry out most work on my 129 but am going to use a local hood specialist who have agreed to fit any manufacturer's hood ;-)

I believe the R129 DVD is available in the US only, however I'm sure you'll find several copies on ebay ;-)

Just a quick update.

Greg has also made contact will Klaus from KHM and the Technical Director of the German 129 SL-Club. Here's Greg's comments:

You won't believe this. Talk about the power of t'internet!!

I've had a mail just now from the Technical Director of the German SL-129 club. He copied in a chap from Daimler-Chrysler who did all of the development of the R129 soft top throughout its life at MB!!!! He does fit replacements in his spare time.

And guess what he uses? Why, KHM of course. Apparently, He and Klaus Mayer worked closely together when developing the KHM product....

Phew!
So, yet more evidence pointing towards KHM
