Hi ,
Just lost coolant from what I think is a very short hose on the left hand side (standing in front of the car)of the radiator , it's about half way up the rad but doesn't connect to anything, it's looks like a rubber stopper ?
Any ideas chaps ?
Cheers

Hi thanks for the reply and the dia grams .
I have studied them and I can't see the part . It's half way down the radiator on the left but it's only 1 inch long but doesn't connect to anything , it either is a drain stopper or an accessory that was not put on the car . The best way I can describe is like cap that you would use to cover a bottle , hope this makes sense .
Cheers

Sounds like the coolant drain plug Ewan. Even Mercedes parts can't charge too much for that! Where are you in Cheshire?

IMG_3348.JPG Fair point it shouldn't be half way up from memory unless you have to tip the car on its side to drain...only image I could find was this...look like this OP?

Hi John,
Thanks for reply.
I've checked it and it's not the drain plug . It has a jubilee clip on it and the drain plug is on the opposite side to the drain plug . It also faces the engine if that makes sense ?

someone wiser than me will no doubt let you know the exact thing its for, i am 5000 miles from being able to look under my bonnet .i am thinking maybe a circulation point for heating in car when car switched off , but its a pure guess . in which case you could probrably cut some inner tube and clamp in over the pipe to get you home ,if you do something like that double up the tube as the raditor stub might cut into the first patch, then keep an eye on water temp , remember no temp shown does NOT mean all ok , most likely means no water around temp sender.not good .

Now look like a forced drain ( suction) outlet though goodness knows why! Ewan give my mate Ian a call http://www.ianstuartmotors.com/
Tell him I sent you ( he used to work with me ) and see what he can do for you - he's in Holmes Chapel...

Thanks for the information, I will give him a call if merc can't post one to me . I didn't want to risk driving too far and over heating the engine .

, seen picture , so long as its just the cover tube you dont have a big drama at all ,can get home ok as mentioned before, if there is a crack at the base of the stub thats a different matter fixing a replacement cover and watching it for a while will provide answer, even at benz doubt that cocer will cost you more than a couple of beers

There is a rubber stopper on that side of the radiator. I have seen them before. Usually the same radiator in a 500 or AMG model that has an additional coolant hose which is unused on the 350 so it is just blanked off.

Thanks Steve - I don't have my 230 SL500 anymore but I was sure it was right...thought I was going mad for a minute!
