Rear auto close hatch not closing

Hello All, the auto close rear hatch on my 2009 ML 164 is starting to beep and not close when the button is pressed. Not all the time but its getting more frequent.
I'm guessing this may be some sort of motor giving up, could it be anything simpler or worse ?
