Simply put, an mb is nothing like it was 20 Yr ago, nor, often is the service.
For comfort still one of best, reliability and running costs, customer service, far from it.
I wud go as far to say, if you can't fix em yrself, avoid a 6+ year old benz it's a likely money pit. . A 25 Yr old benz prob less hassle, as comfortable, likely cheaper to run, DIY can fix and may even go up in value. If it's a rare, uncommon car u crave, plenty about at less or same as 70k + benz prices.

I wonder if you refuse to pay for bolts etc in advance, will they refuse to do the work and allow you to drive off with a snapped subframe?

Or, can you say they need to reuse everything except the subframe, would they actually do that, or just replace anyway?

It seems a nonsense for Merc to say 'we will do some of a job, but you need to pay for some bits that we will have to do anyway that are part of the job'.
To keep cost, effort and time down they probably just grind off the old bolts.
These "courtesy" fixes will be costing MB big money and like always its not MB that foots the bill it is the customer. They will negate every single loss they can

Dealer never gets the same hourly rate for recalls as they get from walk in customers.

It’s a problem across all makes, the dealers don’t want to do recall work as they make less money and use the work to fill in any spare mechanic hours that they don’t have chargeable work for. Hence the upsell and charging for sundries like bolts and nuts.

It’s not the dealer at fault, it’s the importer that sets the recall job rate and what is paid for and what isn’t.

Bet that was a bum wiggling journey and not just because you had a wobble box on the back
We didn't realise quite how bad it was until Alex Foti phoned us up to tell us we couldn't drive the car any further...

Under Mobilo I had a front subframe issue on my old barge that got a MB repair plate from them they didn't charge for the Mig Wire.
Front spring perches again no charge for the rivets.
Panel replacements no charge for new fixings.
And the MB people that actually arranged it and did it apologised for the state of it.

MB UK were the jobsworths that we heard about in the Post office scandal I too have had said to me "it's only you" and they tried to make out I was unique.

I have replaced/fixed things on properties I have sold, first I apologised, then at no expense to them did whatever was required and usually sent around a gift for the inconvenience.

Strangely enough, the customers came back and I wasn't bounced through the courts.

I think it's just called good practice.

Take it on the chin MB, you have made the mistake so sort it out and park Mr Pedantic bolt charger in an office sorting pencils.

Yes, you may have to drop in a few extra things to complete the job, live with it, have some respect for the people you have inconvenienced .

It won't take too many retained customers to get back on top.
