Are Mercs now galvernised to prevent the rust problems they previously had?
And were the older ones previously galvernised. If not what have they done to prevent this?

Just curious

Many new MBs use non-ferrous composite body panels that simply don't rust.

I believe older MBs were not galanized but relied upon many thick coats of paint for corrosion protection. You could scratch the paint and it would still provide adequate protection.

It seem the manufacturer's move to using thinner coats of water-based paint became the marque's Achilles Heel as far as corrosion is concerned.

The electrics can be troublesome too but maybe this has more to do with the increasing sophistication of modern electronic systems. They can be so complex that technicians need a Degree in Automotive Electrical Systems in order to be able to understand and fault them.

It depends on where you buy your metal, Citreon many years ago are a good example with the CX, One car could be perfect on front, back and roof, but have 4 rusty doors, another one would have perfect doors and the rest rusted away. I used to buy one of each and make one good car.
it was the same paint on both.
