Rust rear wheel arch 03 SL55, pics in post

Hi All,

I have the opportunity to buy a '03 SL55 that us fully loaded, has great history, good mileage, roof motor, seals and ABC recently done, and a nice price. Trouble is it has rust on the wheel arch.

I've read some posts saying it can be anything from a repair to a complete respray.

I have no clue and was wondering if anyone would care to chip in with a wee but of advice!

Dying to pull the trigger on this one, just not too sure if the extent of the rust issue and what it might set me back.

The whole wing will have to be resprayed and possibly more to get a match

I did a DIY for doing the insides but this is beyond that

Hi, the rust on the rear wheel arches/ re SL are very common but if treated right it can be cured for good and as i have said before MB dont rust proof them !

Wow, thank you for such fast responses.

So it sounds like I had feared, a respray of the rear wing which sounds like it will turn into half the car, into a potential full respray.

So tomorrow I will need to lead with the head, not the heart at bargaining time as this is a bit of a job.

Many cars have had this work done, they have had to, it not the end of the world if the price allows for it, if it is a good car otherwise then better maybe from another one.

You dont have to respray the half the car and i can match any colour

May I refer you to this Album; this represents £730 of money well spent. I went to Multi-Tech who are closer to me but I have no doubt that Clive would do an equally competent job.

you may well end up spraying half the car if rust hasnt quite shown itself in other areas yet, run your fingers round the arch lips
