I have a v19 Mercedes disc to up date the currently installed v18 (a present). Is it simply a matter of installing the new disc or will I need to take it to a Mercedes garage?

Just insert the new disc and wait for the update to complete.
May be worth connecting a battery charger during the update to ensure the process isn't stopped by low voltage.

which head unit?

w221 and the SL equiv with NTG 3 has the "Lime Green V17" as the latest 2018/19 mapping. Needs to be on power supply or with engine running (as per the paperwork)

an earlier head unit just takes the disc and reads from it all the time?

Thanks to all.
I have now updated model. Sold the SL.
One follow up question, taking on board the comments about battery drain, is it possible to run the disc update whilst driving?

Thanks. Will update on the drive, didn't think as far as bumpy roads.
