Well, I love MB and in a dilemma of what's next.
The SBC light is on and 2 options - maybe 3. Option 1) an SBC part that hasnt been refurb'd by Bosch is fitted Option 2) a Bosch refurb part is fitted and Option 3) I say goodbye to my trusted MB.
On the boards, a few ppl have had this SBC dilemma and resetting the counter isnt what I really want to do, as I do drive over 70mph on the odd occasions and so I want the breaks to work and have no doubt. So resetting the counter wouldnt give me peace of mind.
Costs are associated with all 3 options and if you have some recommendations.....please

Hello and welcome,

Get the SBC pump maintained - it's a maintenance item - cheaper than a new car

What should I be paying for a new pump roughly?

Get yours refurbed, shouldn't need a new one - you might be lucky on ebay as per below thread

Thank you, I spoke with a really nice engineer just now and he said because of the red light that is showing on the dashboard saying "stop" dont drive, that some fault codes that appear, cause the unit to effectively lock you out. In this scenario the only option is to obtain a refurbished SBC unit from the manufacturer Bosch, and I think that will cost the earth. Do you have any idea what this might cost?

Also, the guy from the same company was really helpful and said that they may be able to refurb the unit, but only if it isnt showing one of the codes that locks the SBC unit up. So, next stage is to figure out what those fault codes are, and without driving the car that is tricky.

Hi Sara
In autumn last year my SBC pump failed and I got my local Mercedes Specialist in Bedford to take care of it. He had to send the pump away to have it reconditioned/refurbished and then when it came back he refitted it and took care of all of the brake work. That cost me £1000.

If you are able to do all of the work yourself you could send it off to a company that does refurbs and then refit it yourself. One I have heard of but have no experience of is:
https://www.ecu-repair.co.uk/product-page/sbc-pump-refurbish-service-by-post

If your car has a full service history with a Mercedes dealer they might do it for you for free. I know someone who has a W211 which they have a full service history with their MB dealer and was able to get this done. Having said that you are more than likely going to have to pay just as I did.

I hope that helps.

Hi Paul,

Thank you.

I would roll with £1000, . I cant refit, although wish I could.

Sounds like the guys in Bedford were pretty spot on. Do you have their website link pls and I will call them.

The car has always been serviced by Mercedes,. For the first 5 years or so by the dealership and then by local Mercedes Specialists. So we do have the full service history and I dont know if this would cover us. Will contact a dealership and see how they respond.

I had an issue with my ABS pump and my MB dealership wanted £2.3K to fit a new one. Took the pump to "ECU Testing in Heanor" expecting them to refurbish the pump...at a fraction of the cost of a new one, they tested it and said it was one of the best pumps they had tested...so back to the dealer and it turned out, I had put a couple of ABS Bosch sensors which I got off the internet which didn't relate to my vehicle registration. So after this episode , I only use genuine OE sensors...lesson learned.

Your current specialist will likely have contacts to repair/refurbish your unit, they will also know your car so can likely advise what will be the best options for you

Hi Sara
My Specialist is Millenium Mercedes in Bedford. https://www.millenniummerc.co.uk/
If you live in another part of the country there is bound to be a good specialist nearby who will be able to quote for the work. You never know they may even do it for a bit less. Good luck and hopefully you will have it all sorted soon.

I can also recommend ECU Testing in Heanor for electronics type of work. I have visited the premises and it looks like a proper professors laboratory.

I had 2 Volvo electronic throttles modified there. Nice service.

Thank you Paul : ) I will call them today.

Prices so far (from yesterday) are 2500, and upwards. No one is coming in near £1000. Just the part alone from Bosch (refurb) is coming in at £3100. I am keeping my fingers crossed.

Hi Sara,
This is what I experienced when I fitted the ABS pump to my Vito.
Luckily for me, Heanor was only a few miles away and I as it happened I was working at an engineering company on the same industrial estate.
As DSK says, when you go to their premises , it appears you are walking onto a film set full of boffins.
Although I had this issue in November 2017, here were the cost implications at the time.
(i) A new MB ABS pump. £2K + vat.
(ii) Own pump refurbished £220 + vat.
(ii) Testing own pump. £50 + vat.
As these guys seemed to be very popular, which was self evident with all the different pumps etc awaiting testing/ refurbishing, you can expect to wait awhile for a result......"patience is a virtue". I had the pump back after 4 days.
The actual process of removing and refitting the pump was very straightforward on my Vito, ....electrical plug connector and half a dozen hydraulic brake pipes. Refitting was a bit more involved having to putting new brake fluid and bleed the brake system....so that's another bonus... new brake fluid.
I had my Vito jacked up on my drive for just over week.....I trust this gives you an incite as to what you can expect

Very cost effective and you are skilled to be able to remove/refit the pump and drop it off locally. Having some of the smarts to do it yourself are so advantageous.

I will take a look at their webiste. Thank you

Update - had a call with them a really nice lady. And they dont refurb this particular Bosch part, which is a shame as their outfit/factory looked really professional.

They were very helpful but need to see the car to download the codes via Star. And they confirmed about £1k so thank you again.

Next step for me, is to organise for the recovery to an MB dealership so that they can download the fault codes from Star and pinpoint/diagnose and then see where it takes us.

I think from reading the boards that some of faults even point to the brake lines (hydraulics?). If I do need to replace the SBC unit or have it refurbed I now have a plan. Thank you

I had my SBC pump fail and was lucky enough to find a new old stock one for about £350 which I then fitted myself.

Fitting is easy with only the bleed procedure requiring special tools and STAR.

An easy job to do within a half day for a half competent mechanic.

A quick look on eBay pulls up a number of rebuild services but before using them I would ask what they do. The usual cause of failure is the brushes in the pump motor wear out. Again this can be DIYed but is fiddly. Some 'rebuilds' merely reset counters. Others do it properly and repair and replace worn parts but it's hard to know which do what.

You could consider a used pump but that will have an unknown lifespan. Typically pumps fail at 80-120k miles so any pump with that mileage is largely worthless. If a pump with 50k on it were available at the right price it's worth considering.

If peace of mind is important then the sensible option is a Bosch refurbished pump or new MB one.

At the moment, we don't have a diagnosis...I had the same dilemma, so took y Vito to my local main dealership,{ before I invested in a Launch X431 pro scanner}, they put their computer on it,in static mode, and diagnosed a new ABS pump. Which I subsequently proved the pump was fine, after I refitted the pump, they still insisted the pump was faulty....they spent further hours in a static mode doing checks...it wasn't until they took it on a road test and they did some dynamic data streaming to identify incorrect ABS sensors fitted. So I would suggest you get them to do road test so they can see what is happening.
How long have you had the SBC light on?
