Thanks Stumpy - I'm taking it that is Rossetts Commercials of Aldershot? I'll give them a ring in the morning and see what they can tell me!
I tried ringing John Tallis of Bath this afternoon to see if they gave the same info as M-B of Cheltenham. Their parts man told me it used standard ATF. When I challenged this, he put me through to Sales, who told me I needed parts, who put me back to Sales, who eventually came up with the same gear oil as M-B of Cheltenham had suggested. They then commented that they thought it took "something like 3.5 litres, but we're not really very sure"

Thought you might like to know...... we drained the gearbox, and an eggcup full of sludge came out of it. Replaced that with about 1.5 litres of Mercedes Gear Oil (up to the filler hole). Car now drives smoothly......but fault remains the same.

Was that only an eggcup full of sludge or that amount of sludge together with a litre or so of oil? Hopefully the latter.
