I have just bought a C 180 M203 reg 2003 estate which lost the tension in the serpentine belt. On inspection the belt tensioner dropped out of the engine and it appears that the bolt running down the center of the spring has sheared. The rest of the bolt is still on the engine and loose.

There seems to be no easy way of replacing the bold without a major dismantling of the front of the engine ? I am new to mercedes and don't know if I am doing something wrong - any help would be really appreciated.

Thats bad luck, if there is a little still sticking out, then maybe you can unscrew it, otherwise possible both rads off to get to it.

Thanks Malcolm
This is a photo of the sheered off bolt that's now projecting from the front of the engine with the tensioner removed.

And these are the photos of the belt tensioner -

I've managed to get the broken bit of bolt out of the tensioner so that can be re-fitted but it looks like the old bolt is tightened up from the engine side so it looks like the large aluminium casting has to come off?

I only bought the car 2 days ago, no workshop manual (can't get hold of one for a few days) so I don't know what I'm looking at.

Any help gratefully received.

Update - I've started stripping down the front of the engine, it looks like a lot of the pulleys have to come off. The crankshaft pulley bolt is very tight. Does anyone know if it has a left hand thread ? Sorry for all the posts but I'm getting a bit desperate.

That doesn't sound right...
There seems plenty to grip on to, to remove the rest of the bolt.

You are right and not the way it is fitted,

what engine do you have, should be the 111 and I have all the information to do this.

In order to get the casting off I'm having to remove some pulleys and the problem at the moment is the crank shaft pulley which is either very tight or has a left hand thread ?
Thanks Malcolm for helping me with this.

The crankshaft damper pulley is very tight, and torqued up to 200Nm plus 90º for stage 2.

The pulley cannot be pulled off by hand and it needs a puller.

It also needs a counter holder to keep the crankshaft from turning.

Just wanted to check if there is any other way of doing this - It's my first job on the car and something I thought was going to be relatively simple is turning into a complete nightmare - any advice to make it easier would be so gratefully received.

There is no way the the starter ring can be jammed as severe damage to the crankshaft could take place

Could you borrow or hire the tool for holding the pulley.

Thanks for all your help Malcolm - I've done all I can but the lack of manual and special tools has mean that this time I've had to contact a garage to do the job - next time I'll be more prepared.
Thanks again.

I could have given you all the technical help, but without the special tools its hardly doable yourself.

Just saying the the correct torque of the pulley and the correct clamp to hold it are important.
