There is a guy on EBay Selling the information to highest bidder..on how to reset the Service light on C Class and ML class. People are paying Big Dollars . Some one here should know how. That's the point of this web page I thought. How about we share these Mercedes Benz Top Secrets ... and not sell this information., Some one know? Thank You.

I believe that resetting the service indicator for my 2000 C250TD is as follows:

- Turn key to position 2 and immediately press "0" twice on the instrument panel (within a second I think)
- Turn key to position 1
- Press "0" again and hold it whilst turning key back to position 2. Keep "0" depressed all the time whilst you are doing this
- Display should show current remaining distance/time then after about 8-10 seconds the new service distance/time will appear for about 8-10 seconds
- Now you can release the "0" button

Steved, the ?Check Engine? light indicates an Engine Management/Emissions fault with the vehicle. On newer cars you need an EOBD/ OBD II code reader to reset the light and retrieve/fix the fault codes causing it to illuminate. In the UK, Mercedes only became compliant with EOBD (similar to OBD II in USA) from 1999/2000 - depending on model - but I think OBD II dates back to 1996 in the USA.

A source of EOBD reader/reset tools in the UK is here.

Hi Techie

If only it was soooo simple. A common misconception is that a vehicle fitted with an OBD plug will allow any body with a fault code reader to acess the various ECU's fitted to the vehicle. Untrue. As far as I am aware with regards to emission problems for mot tests. Only a limited amount of information is available. Nowhere near acessing fault codes. From the same OBD plug. All the systems on the vehicle can be acessed. Do you really think MB would allow just anybody to acess their infomation. Not a chance. The EU will go as far as allowing acess to information as long as you pay for it. You can get the relevant computors as long as you show thats how you make your living & are willing to pay the price.

I doubt knowing the prices MB charge for info and the software that, has taken them years to develop. That most people would be willing to pay the money.

Also. Having the fault codes is only in a lot of case probably a third of the way. Trust me. Not always will the codes actually tell what is happening. Something else on the car not related or is causing a roll over problem if you see what I mean, can through up a fault code.

Good luck though

Andy,

Thanks for the reply.

From my understanding, since 01/01/2001 European Regulations enforce every petrol car sold in Europe to be fitted with an EOBD, 16-pin diagnostic port and to communicate in one of the following protocols: ISO, PWM, VPW, KWP2000, CAN (most Mercedes appear to use ISO). There are heavy fines for manufacturers who not comply with these regulations.

I agree that you will not be able to access every system in a vehicle without the manufacturer?s diagnostic tool, costing thousands of pounds. However, the tools linked-to in my previous post will read Engine Management and Emissions related Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTC?s) off any petrol vehicle sold in Europe after 01/01/2001 (except a small number of 2003 vehicles, as this tool does not support CAN). They will not talk to ABS, SRS or Climate control systems.

It is true that one fault in a vehicle can lead to many fault codes being stored. However, if you erase all the stored codes and keep testing to see which occurs again first, the number of possible causes can usually be reduced.

Do you really think MB would allow just anybody to acess their infomation. Not a chance

Unfortunately, I don't think they have a choice these days. The European regulations were introduced to prevent main dealers squeezing independent garages out of business. Engine management and Emissions information must be provided at the 16-pin diagnostic port of the vehicle complying with the EOBD standard. Therefore, not only are the fault codes accessible but also live sensor data, freeze frame data, continuous and non-continuous test results and more.

This link provides additional information on the subject and shows some other tools which can read the live data:

I don?t think this Creader, EOBD tool is by any means aimed at garages but it provides home users and hobbyist mechanics, such as myself, with an opportunity to fix some of the simpler engine faults :D .

Best regards,
