I had both re calls done, in both cases they extended the running of the pump per cycle

The goal post seem to keep moving on this matter, we used to send all our sbc replacement jobs to MB for free replacement, irrespective of who serviced it.

SBC Message less than 12 months since pump replaced...is this normal

I had the SBC pump on my E320 CDi replaced free of charge under warranty at the end of May last year. I have now got the annoying Brake Service visit workshop coming on at every start up and the occasional red reduced braking restart engine message if I turn the engine off at the "wrong time". I am tiring of the whole SBC problems particularly in light of recent developments. It is starting to put me off Mercedes to the point I am thinking of switching back to BMW.
First off is it likely that the SBC is faulty so soon? Secondly I replaced the brake switch about the same time that the pump was replaced is this likely to have failed again. I bought the switch on e-bay and worry that it is an inferior type....any recommended online place to order this part? Also is there a reasonable Star Diagnostic service in Manchester that anyone can recommend, or should I go direct to the dealer due to the youth of my SBC pump?
Thanks in advance for any suggestions?

Unfortnately, this seems to be an increasingly common occurrence. You are not the first! The FOC replacements do appear to have a VERY short service life in some instances.

I know this seems a daft question, but the Block Exemption say's you can have your car serviced using matching quality parts without affecting the warranty.

So taking that into account what does it matter if the car has full MB service history or Indy service history.

Also taking into account is the fact the Indy could have used 100% Genuine Merc Benz parts for your servicing, how can Merc Benz prove any other.

Seeing as the pump is not a service item, how can the above have a effect on replacing the pump F.O.C or not.

Because it is a gesture of good will I would think on reflection.

The car probably ought to go back to where the sbc pump was fitted for their diagnosis and advice.
For my own part, any messages that do not remain on screen or do not arrive on screen once the engine is running and the car in gear and in motion are dutifully ignored.
The reduced brake effect; start engine message (before the engine is started) has been showing on my SL since February 2011, 27mths.
Brakes are fine.

I would think the first question to ask if you car is dated before 05/07/2004 to ensure it had the recall done as per the VOSA web site.

If the re call work has not been carried out I would think that you should be entitled to have the work done FOC ?

Did they actually replace the unit or just extend its run time ?
What does the paperwork say ?

It cannot be updates as the car had a new pump or so the OP was told, plus the updates had nothing to do with any warning that came up on the dash

I have just finished reading the whole of this thread with interest which took me 3 days on and off. I have just had the message appear in white on my 2003 SL so not yet at the red warning stage, how long is it before it gets to that stage?
I am pretty anxious as to my impending call with my local Mercedes dealer in Stratford-upon-Avon and whether I should ask at that time if they are covering the cost of the SBC (if it is indeed the SBC) or just get it booked in with them and wait to see what they say after its diagnosed. The car has got MB history up until the last 2 services as the previous owner started using an independent due to cost versus age. I could take it to the people that have looked after it over that time as they are local to me (I bought the car locally from the previous owner) but will they be able to diagnose it or even set the run time longer IF this hasn't been done already, or even replace it?

Do all Mercedes dealers charge £150 just to plug it in to Star? is Star the name for Mercedes diagnostics machine?

No fixed pattern as to how they charge but £75 is more the norm,, in the case of a free repair they normally refund this cost, or they have done in some cases

To answer subsequent responses...

Yes it was a brand new unit fitted FOC, but that said it should still be under a 12 month warranty would it not?.....Taking it to the garage that did the work is not an option. The work was done in Chelmsford and I now work in Manchester....I will replace the brake switch at the foot pedal (again) just to make sure and get it to a star diagnostic - will call a few locally tomorrow. If it is the SBC I will need to check if the Merc dealers will honour 12 month warranty on new parts considered standard. If anyone can paste a link to the VOSA recall notice I will verify with the dealer if there is a record of this work being done as per VOSA recommendations.
I don't know if its my imagination but it does seem to reduce the other electronic functions on the car...perhaps it is keeping the CAN bus busy more often or something (silly things like ocassionally the wipers don't come on automatically, I remember this being noticeable last year when this issue happened)
Anyway thanks for the posts, any further assistance/advice welcome and I shall post any news as I get it....

I think as it was fitted FOC, they will say that there is no warranty. If you paid £1 towards it it would be covered?? I think someone on here had a similar problem when his replacement sbc pump failed. Not sure if this will be the case though.

I had that message all the time on my SL Mic, the 06 New SL that I got for a guy down the road never gets the message and the pump never runs as much as mine did if a door was opened.

As on the other pump thread, if I got my hands on one I could tell you what has been changed on a recon pump.

That's a bit more sociable than having to ask or find out elsewhere.
