Hi

I've got a tear in the bottom of the seat cushion and, thanks to the local franchise of Leather Doctor, a bodged dye-job meaning that either a new seat or recover are the only options I can think of.

I've been quoted around £600 by a chap in the Potteries called "Pete the Seat" to recover the seat and I wondered if this was reasonable and whether anyone else had their seats recovered?

Cheers
Ade

Plenty of seats around in breakers, or a piece could be inserted and the normal way to do it. They are dead easy to remove but very heavy

Just for the record and removing them... tilt the backrest in towards the steering wheel, about ½ way.

Raise the seat and take out 3 x 10mm bolts on the inside and 2 on the outside. The plastic rail covers slide off.

Tilt the set back and remove the big plug,by sliding the cover, if any vacuum pipe, pull the connector out.

Place a blanket over the sill and lift seat out. If you turn ignition on with seat removed, then STAR needed to turn off SRS warning

And some big muscles. This is really a two man job, not joking. I could barely lift mine, it's very tight and awkward and heavy.

Tell me about it, I did it 3 years ago at 76, I got them out and into the garage but never again. :D

I know this is an old thread but I am faced with the same job on the passenger side to repair broken plastic covers. And no, I have no idea how it happened as it was before my tenure but the imagination runs riot...
I was wondering about opening the roof and using a hoist over a beam in the garage to lift it out. Might be worth a try!

The last time I removed the seat on my R230, I used lengths of timber 2 by 4 to support the seat, gradually raise it forward and back, and slide it over the sill. Achieved without injury to self or damage to the sill.

Looks like someone has been in there before you BTW.

at least in a drop head car you can stand while removing a seat. ;)
Or even get a hoist from the garage rafters.....or I even considered releasing all the four fixing bolts and rocking it up on some blocks so I can get at the underneath. This would also save upsetting the electrical and vacuum connections. I'll have a shufti with a mirror over the weekend to see if this is viable.

I notice that the late Television suggested that if the ignition was left off, then none of the SRS/air bag system would get upset, however the SRS system flagged up a fault when I removed a seat from my R Class despite the key never being anywhere near the car while the seat was out.

I followed Malcolms advice on the numerous times I removed my R230 SL55 seats and never had a problem with the SRS light. Might be different on the R Class.

Well that's alright, then! Thanks gentlemen!
Not had a chance to grope about underneath but getting the seat up on 4" blocks might mean not having to remove it entirely.
And I have a Carsoft so resetting anything should not be a problem.
