I have a 1997 e320 with auto gearbox problems. From a cold start until there is temperature on the gauge it stays in low gear. When moderate acceleration is required it won't change down a gear unless manually selected. Kickdown works normally and when moving away form rest it goes through the gears normally.

I'm ashamed to say it's been like this for 3 years and doesn't bother me, however I'm passing the car on to a family member and must get it fixed.

Any help would be much appreciated.

Sad to say this was almost normal on some cars back then. The cars were made to hold on to a low gear in order to warm up the CATS as quickly as possible. Some cars were worse than others. if the fluid has never been changed and on most it never was, this could help, it might be possible also to have the box adapted so that it a little better.
