Spare key

I've just bought an 03 a-class at the weekend, but it only has 1 key! Can anyone advise me as to whether I can re-programme one from e-bay, or does a new one have to come from Mercedes?? I was also wondering whether a locksmith might do one???

Any help on this matter would be great!

Hi Porky, and welcome. The only place to get a key is your MB dealer, you cannot use the ones on Ebay as they cant be programed.

You must take the car log book and ID proof with you, they cost £145 on average, and take about 6 days to come.

Whatever you do, do not listen to all those E Bay sellers who tell you that the dealers can reprogramme, just not true.

I wonder how long it'll be before they start issuing the newer style chrome key to us older Merc owners? I need to order a spare too but I'm holding out until I can get the newer one

I don't know, I do know that they have 2 x CR2025 batteries in though and they do look very nice

Standard CR2025 batteries available from many locations, although the market may not be the best place for Varta ;-)

I've just ordered one

Just been this morning to order a new Key - £215 they charged!! I spoke to lots of people about getting a key, and every one I spoke to also said that you have to buy direct from Mercedes. That price is the same no matter where you go. The key itself is made in Germany, so it takes 3-5 days to get a replacement.

The car needs to be in your name and you need to take:
- Log book
- Passport/drivers licence
- Utility bill

Very very convoluted and expensive process.

Hi television, thanks for the offer mate, but only one key came with the car when I bought it. I managed to get some money knocked off for not having a spare key, but I based the cost of a spare key on my dad's Saab which cost £70 didn't realise a new one would be £215!

I have a S plate Mercedes A140 Key which is not working. i have had the batteries changed but still not working. the Alarm of my vehicle goes off everytime i try to open the car with the metal key. i have had had the AA to look at it and they have said the key is faulty. any idea's as to what it may be?

Hi,
I believe the A class of this age uses an IR remote, I would try to see if the IR signal is being sent from the key when the button is pressed, using a digitial camera, if there is no signal, you could take the key apart and run a soldering iron over the PCB, paying particular attention to the tactile switches on the board, as your key might have dry joint or the key might of been dropped at some time dislodging a component.
I take it you know the batteries are the right way round?
Failling that I believe your only alternative is to get a new key from MB. Though I believe the IR ones like yours are not quite as expensive as the combined RF/IR key, but theres not much difference £30-40 less IIRC.

Hi not much difference in price with merc main dealer on das 2 keys, ie blade type only shorter time in obtaining.
