There is what I can best describe as a 'dry rubber seal squeak' as I turn the S/wheel either way, even turning the wheel an inch or so either way causes this annoying squeak.

Any ideas

Do check your bottom swivels easily tested by jacking the front of the car

I hope its what Malcolm says - mine (yr2000 E240) needed a new rack to shut it up.
Do also try a bit of lube on the rubber supports under the dash.

Bit overdue this response but checked the bottom steering links/swivels etc so it seems it is either of the two suggestions made by yourself:(, In getting at the rubber supports is there anything I need to be aware of and if that fails what sort of cost etc for a replacement rack, given that at present I am unable to do this myself :(:(

With the front of the car jacked, you could possibly hear the steering swivels by putting a large bladed screwdriver onto each joint and the handle to your ear, and turning the steering, swivels are a 90% failure as apposed to the steering racks

Get some of these from a Vet, the ones they stick in horses, you can fill them with oil and inject through the rubber boot
