I cleaned the car yesterday - and god did it need it - and I discovered tiny black spots all over the paintwork.

These were identified as 'tar spotting' which appeared as a result of our lane being resurfaced a couple of weeks ago.

Tentatively I tried a few products from Mercedes cleaning kit, having high hopes of the bird crap cream. Alas none worked.

Neighbours are al scrubbing their cars with t-cut and god-knows-what to get this stuff off.

What does everybody recommend ?

It's going in next week for a service, shall I ask the dealer ?

Small amount of petrol on a rag works a treat

+1 for the AutoGlym Intensive Tar Remover.

Also there are sprays on the market that you can spray on, leave for 5 to 10 mins. then wipe off. I've got a bottle of Gtechniq W6 which turns purple on contact with contaminates like Tar.

I used it on my wheels last week and it's good stuff, but has a very strong smell.

Another option would be to use a Claybar that would get rid of small Tar spots.

I give my car a white spirit "bath" every spring......the problem of tar spotting arises most through the winter months.

Best I found. Apparently does not harm paint.
Wash car first, use the wifes cootton wool. Not the pads. Wipe on leave a few mins then wipe off. Chuck cotton wool frequently as there can be grit stuck on the tar.

I then rewash the car with strong solution of autoglyms car wash.

I used Gtechniq W6 Iron and General Fallout remover on my car at the weekend.

To be precise, a wax I suggest, as the tar remover/petrol/meths/napalm will have removed your protection coat.

That makes sense, maybe it's a good thing I was waiting for warmer weather!

I will try a small area first. The paint finish is very good for a 12 year old car, but I wouldn't want it to be dulled.
