I remember putting a gallon in the Ford Anglia, two halves of Lager one for me and one for my mate, going out on the pull all for a £1. Great nights out in those days

Do you know, when I were a lad you could get a tram down into t'town, buy three new suits an' an ovvercoat, four pair o' good boots, go an' see Frank Randall at t'Palace Theatre, get blind drunk, 'ave some steak an' chips, bunch o' bananas an' three stone o' monkey nuts an' still 'ave change out of a farthing. ;)

But a tenner when you were in your teens/early 20s was a Kings ransom
Early 90s I'll have you know, I'm not quite an old fart no matter what my darling daughter might tell me. :)

Back in the early seventies I worked for a company called Performance Autos as a salesman. I went into Cambridge to pick up a RR shadow series 2. On my way back I had to stop to get a bit of petrol just to get me back to the garage. That left me with the distinction on putting £1.00p's worth of petrol in a Rolls Royce !!

In the early 80s I would put £1 a day into my Morris Minor...why...because people liked to borrow it (yes, really, wide alloys etc and a front spoiler) and this way they'd have to put their own fuel in.

You didn't have to put on a raspy exhaust on that either because they already had one ! ;)

I remember 50p a gallon, the government suggested incorporating road tax into the price of fuel and increasing it to £1 a gallon, we were outraged at the time.

Where Mercedes cars are concerned I don't think they do build them like they used to!

They also don't quite price them (equivalent to market) like they used to either!

I dunno. They broke down more but you could fix them a lot more easily.

You could say that about most cars these days. Mechanics have become technicians and most issues seem to be electrical. The more gadgets the more to go wrong.

First time I filled a car up it was 38p a gallon, that would have been around 1976. I still convert everything back to gallons, just one of many things that does swmbos head in :D

Must have been earlier? I got my first car in 1977 and the gallon was 76p...then went down to 73p. I suppose it could have doubled in a year...but that happened in 1973?
