As MALCOLM says all MERCEDES engines petrol and diesel have chain driven timing gear. The latest high torque 4 cylinder diesel engines even have timing gear at the rear of the engine rather than the front.

no joke alexander !! I do not know much about the engine, and as the car has done 50000 miles I was concerned that it may need a belt change!!
