You will need an XL tyre or the car won’t handle properly. IMO crabbing is caused by a combination of things, low profile tyres (especially runflats), suspension set-up (camber) and the Ackerman principle.

Suv tyres come in both formats, you don't need to fit XL for correct handling . XL tyres for an SUV are simply that ,extra load . When taking family away on camping holidays for eg.

If you meant just on the front then yes , I'd agree ,to do all 4 .

Ackerman is obviously to blame in my case .

I suppose my thoughts are directed at the sporty end of SUV ownership if you don’t fit XL rated tyres the vehicle will be unstable cornering at speed

Never had an SUV and yet all of my MBs have recommended XL tyres when switching to winters. I suspect that is because they are generally narrower than the summer fitment. If you fit the same width as your summer tyres then they probably wont need to be XL.
In this case I think that its the rubber hardness rather than the sidewall stiffness that exacerbates the crabbing.

I recon your onto something there , I'll be fitting the same fitment as summers . All the winters I've looked at are all XL . So hopefully it's the softer rubber that yields on full lock , even with a reinforced sidewall .

Are your crossclimates XL sidewall??
Yes, XL front and back. Michelin Cross Climate 2 SUV, all the same size as standard fitment. Mine are on 19 inch rims and air suspension.

Based on experience for the last six months, and current wear levels, I will definitely fit them again when I need to change.
