... The driving test should be made to cover some basic mechanical theory and car maintenance.
It already includes questions about basic checks of oil & water. That's like suggesting you should know some basic electronics before you're allowed to buy a phone/telly/etc

Sounds like an excellent idea if you ever saw some of the posts/questions on AVForums - I'd be scared of them even attempting to turn on anything electrical.

Would be interested to hear What happens to the car if the tech bought it as a fixer upper to sell on or to part out. I guess if he can source a good used motor then he can make a good profit for a weekend of work

Pretty mind blowing the lack of basic mechanical knowledge the driver had, even once the engine literally blew up at 70 he still believed a mobile mechanic was going to pull up in his van and fix the car??

He must think rebuilding a car engine is as simple as putting new batteries in the TV remote wow. The driving test should be made to cover some basic mechanical theory and car maintenance.

You would not believe, for a man of 65, just how incompetent he is. As I said at the beginning, he is a lovely chap, very good with numbers (think accountant) and would do anything for you, but show him a hand tool and he is completely flummoxed. I've helped him out many times and on one occasion even ended up with a black eye and cut on the forehead for my troubles as a result of him being so kackhanded and trying to help when he was just being a hindrance. Scarily, I was cutting up a fallen tree in his garden with my chainsaw at the time and had told him to stand well out of the way and don't pick anything up!:)

May be difficult as it currently has a private plate which they will transfer to the new one and the old one given a replacement age related registration.

It will no doubt revert to the original plate it was registered on, unless that has been sold on! In my experience, this has always happened to my cars I have put PP plates on.

Quite incredible though it may seem, as a %, the Nr's of people outside of the trade itself that would have good working knowledge of what goes on under the bonnet, is very small, and even smaller is the Nr who would actually have the technical know how and tool's to do any repair's themselves. Modern vehicle construction and design does not lend itself to amatuer mechanic's. It has long passed that point by now. That's progress for you !!!:cool::cool:
