Hi all,

Today my drivers side door check strap sheared at the end which meets the car body and I'm looking for a replacement.

MB want £50 for the part and I'm frankly too tight to pay that so does anyone know if the door straps for the W203 are interchangeable? Can I fit one from a saloon to my sports coupe for example?

Any ideas chaps?

2014 639 Viano- 651, 5sp Auto. 2009 S211- 646, 5sp Auto.
If the same as the Vito, they are interchangeable left to right, withdrawn from the inside after removal of the lower side trim.

I sourced a replacement off Ebay for £27.96.

You need to hang on to the door when you open it , with no check strap on it to retain it from hitting the wing .It will damage both door and wing.

Thanks I'm aware of that. I'm more concerned with the compatibility of check straps from other w203s.

Does anyone know what metal is generally used to make check straps? I'm guessing it's not aluminium....

I'm struggling to find a direct replacement for mine at a sensible price, there's lots of saloon ones out there but hardly any coupe ones for the longer doors and was thinking of getting the broken attachment on the body welded back together....

Is it the strap thats broken or the fixing that holds it to the door frame? New is the way to go most have had a lot of use second hand . These could fail at any time . New - Price £38 TO £ 42 .

You can get an original mercedes part from Ebay item number is 121474541550. For information they fit both left and right doors. Or if you want second hand check out the breakers on ebay .Search your car and ask the question if they have one ..

Mine has broken where it joins the body of the car. The two E18 bolts are still on the body of the car but the arm has detached quite cleanly which is why I wondered about getting it welded back in situ but I guess it'll look bad when the door is opened and it'll be liable to fail again later.

I'm guessing I'm just being tightfisted as I've got an expensive few months ahead of me.

Finally got around to replacing it today....not too bad a job to be fair: all in all about 45 mins or so and that was ducking inside out of the rain every few minutes.

I did stick a fair sized blob on it to be fair but I was rushing due to the rain to be fair.

I'm half tempted to have the door car off and blob some more and try to work it more into the moving bits when I get a chance.
