Hi Guys

been a long time since i have been on here.

Just picked up a high mileage w203 c220 cdi 2005 with great history.

Any tips on what to check over ?

Many thanks

Check it reaches temperature properly and blows hot air through the vents as the thermostat can fail.

Check the transmission fluid and filters have been done despite being labelled and referred to as sealed for life.

Check under the bonnet on the top of the engine for signs of injector seals failing and leaving black tar like deposits.

Check the condition of the serpentine belt.

Other than that: fuel it and drive it.

How high is the mileage incidentally?

Afternoon Lord Lucan

Malcolm not with us anymore ? Has been some time since been on here.

Box has been serviced with filter , no oily deposits around injectors.

Booked in next week for serpentine belt + discs and pads. Temp sticks at 80 on a run and rises a little when i hit the traffic ( new stat needed ?)

Loads of history inc recent EGR. She has 160k on the clock.

Bought this for the missus.

Many thanks

As LK says, sadly Malcolm is no longer with us :(

My stat used to go no higher than 60 so I changed it and it's now rock solid at 85c regardless of traffic. I'd say see how you get on mpg wise as mine was down to around 33mpg and now it's up to 45mpg post change.

With any luck you'll be able to get it up to 200k. Mine has got 102k on it and it feels new (runs off to touch wood)

Best thing to do is have it at an Indie to give it a good look over and see if there is anything that needs doing. If there is, you can work through it gradually, providing there is nothing hanging off!!!

My old 203 C220CDI did 250k miles and its still going in the hands of someone else.

Very sad news about Malcolm.

Had a c220cdi w203 a few years back, manual version which i liked.

As said its for the missus, will be getting it up my standard as i am very ocd with my cars. Will do the stat next week along with the other bits and get it on the ramp.

Only other thing i noticed was the revs fluctuated a little on the motorway, but if i put it on cruise control it was fine ? Sure its not the torque converter though. Apart from that in really good nick. All matching continentals , everything works and lots oh history. Got 47mpg on a run back from littlehampton.

Genuine stat or mehle / febi any good ?

Cheers

Gary

I used genuine on my 646. It was cheap enough.

Go genuine as the others have said.

If you want to drain the coolant then fair enough but recently done mine so I jacked up the near side of the car and that way I only had to remove about a litre of coolant from the header tank which I added back in afterwards which also meant I didn't need to faff about bleeding, although I have read on here somewhere that they self bleed air from the cooling system.

You may also need an angled/hinged adaptor on the socket to get it in behind the oil filter housing. There's a good how-to article on here somewhere if you can search for it

Who's calling 180k a high miler?
Double it, and you are getting closer.
Wonder what the record is?

My local ac guy worked on an E220 Cdi in the summer which had covered 800k. The (Russian) owner had driven across Northern Africa and even to Moscow and back a few times!

Ive got a few E Classes that come to me with 400k + on them. My dads 211 has done 250k, I took a C220CDI W203 to 250k.

If you look after them, they look after you.

Have noticed the oil seperator leaking, have just ordered the o ring that sits underneath.

Is it likely i will need a new seperator also ? Can you just clean them out ?

Thanks

I always felt that my C220 (S203 Estate) isn't run in yet at only 91K!

Blimey, Robin... that can't be your sole means of transport then?
- My annual usage has decline a lot - I've done around 26K in mine since I bought in 2013.
- SWMBOs car does less than 1K a year.
