Anybody got any tips for replacing the glow plugs on a W210 E300TD (1997)?

It's very easy. About 20 mins to remove manifold.

1.car on ramps.
2. remove undertray centre section.
3. remove manifold to air duct bolt from below.  This is allen head and vertical from below.
4. remove EGR pipe to EGR valve clamp.
5. disconnect pressure sensor electical connection and unbolt from inner wing.
6. disconnect EGR valve at modulator on inner wing.
7. remove all torx manifold to head bolts.
8. lift manifold away starting at the head end to break the seal to the EGR pipe.
9. pull connector from appropriate glow plug and unscrew plug.
10. reverse all operations for refitting.

Dieselman:  would that be more or less the same procedure for the C250TD ??  (albeit one cylinder less)

Hopefully I should never have cause to do so - but I'm a realist and we are talking Mercedes Benz afterall

Thanks Dieselman. Much appreciated. I assume the gasket doesn't need replacing?

sorry I cant really answer as I've not looked at a 250, but probably as the engine family is the same.

Dave K.
The gasket is rubber coated stainless steel and does't need replacing.  If the coating is damaged rub it away with solvent.

I just thought I'd post a reply to cheer you up, if you completed the work yourself of course. My local Mbenz dealer has just charged me £252 for replacing the no.6 glow plug. This included a new gasket and a Test Drive!

That doesn't really cheer me up - I hate to think that they charged you so much for such a simple job (yes, I did do it myself after DM's excellent advice).

Camerog.
Check how many plugs were replaced. Normally a dealer replaces all six as the labour is only a bit more than for one.  However I think £350 ish is also about the norm.

Welcome to the "neibours looking at you as if you are mad, as you work on your MB" club.  They think you must be poor. What they don't realise is you will be if you take it to the dealer, mine is now £89 + VAT per hour.

My neighbours should be used to me working on my own cars by now. I don't trust ANYBODY else to work on any of them (years of owning a Lotus Carlton have tought me this) with the exception of Andy Gale. Problem is, Brum is too d*amn
ed far to travel for every job I need doing. Fancy relocating Andy?
