W210 Juddering on Braking

For a little while now I have had a slight judder when braking, it felt just like a warped front nearside disc (one of those jobs I didn't get round to doing for a few weeks ) Then it became considerably worse and the shudder was accompanied by kind of a knocking. which can be felt though the brake pedal and generally in the car.
So I have replaced both front discs and pads (being very careful to clean the wheel hubs thoughly ) and the original judder has now gone though the secondary fault is still there. The best way I can describe it is it feels like I am driving over a raised bumps or there is something stuck on the tyre. The problem only appears under braking and at low speeds, the heavier the braking the worse it seems. I have of course checked the tyres.

I'm not sure what to check next, Any idea's?

It does sound as if one of your tyres is out of round. Swap the fronts with the backs to see if it behaves differently.

Knocking sounds can be lower joint bushes and drop links.

Thanks for that. I have swapped the tyres round as you suggest (and took the chance to examine them carefully) but it made no difference.
I'm thinking maybe a wheel bearing? I have checked for play and there is only a very slight amount of play on the rocking the wheel in the vertical plane.

Is it difficult to change the wheel bearings? any special tools required?

If your running a 210 its most probably the anti roll bar bushes or drop links. From what I've read on here the drop links are favourite and are a known problem.

Thanks Malcolm, I will check those because as you say it is a common fault though the feel of it does seem to be rotational with the wheel rather than the kind of clunking you get with worn bushes

Yes could be a new disc at fault, I have had that before now

Probably just a bad disc. If you have a dial gauge you can test it easily.

I had an E300TD a few years ago with similar symptoms. Despite it appearing to be a front wheel issue, it was actually the rear discs and pads that were goosed, as astradave81 suggested.
