Good afternoon

My W211 2009 E class has a fairly deep knocking noise coming from the front near side

I have had my man look it over ,there is no play anywhere off the front wheel, bottom ball joint happy leaving him to think it can only be the shock absorber.Just before I had it the OFS Shock was replaced but not the NSF

It is a deep rumble to the point where it sounds like a panel could be loose but doubt that

I can change it but no guarantee ,£140 all in but trying to lower my risk level and increasing my chances of success by indulging in your prior and superior knowledge

Thanks in Ant.........................

Are we talking knocking or rumble? You mention both Paul....

Good point,I would say more knocking than rumble,I say rumble when it goes over a bumpy piece of road for say a 100 yards but knocking in general

Thanks

I have the same sort of thing but livingwith it until it goes to MBS for service after Christmas. I'm guessing shock absorber!

Thanks! That ruins my first thought as if it was pure rumble I’d be looking at the tyres- barring that and with the addition of knocking it could well be a shock absorber. How well does it ‘bounce’ when you press down on that side?

It feels slightly more spongy than other side, put it on full left lock and rocked the car whilst shining bright light in there, but will not know until changed, maybe two shocks should have been done at same time to keep it more even?

Thanks

I’ve always had any of mine replaced in pairs (not been that often though to be honest), just to make sure of balance and balanced tyre wear. Some folks say don’t bother but for me always in a pair.
Does it bounce back up to original level easily or is it reluctant/deadish

Hard to tell but compared to tother side its seems soft but only a smidge and even that is subjective

Tyres are only a 1000 old so all things point to SA

Cheers

The other point is that the new SA will have put pressure on the old one and shortened its life further

Good luck, from reading this I'd say shock absorber also... I'm living with mine until after Xmas when it'll go to Wayne Gates.

Update, happy to report it was the shock absorber, once the old one came out we could see that we were onto a winner as when you pressed it down after an inch or so there was not much more play and it made a noise ,so all good, have been driving every day for two weeks down a strip of old road works just on the nearside to hear the noise and just done it with new SA on and it took it with no noise of course and with considerable stability compared to two week test

Thank you to all contributors
