Hi,

My car's power steering was great until a mechanic while working in engine bay broke the PS reservoir couple of years ago. I recall there was red colored PS fluid in it. The mechanic put the new reservoir free of charge and put Feb brake fluid (green color in it). The steering was really hard and stiff and after some reading in the forums, I asked them to put Pentosin CHF11S in it (green color).
The steering got slightly better but not as good as it used to be. I had to really work hard at steering while parking in tight spots. I changed the PS reservoir with a new one as it seemed a cheap option and put MB Power steering fluid 236.13 in it couple of months ago but it didn't get any better.
Last week, I sourced a used PS pump to try if my pump was bad but it wasn't any better so we put the old pump back. My mechanic suggested to put Dexron ATF III in it and the steering works much better with transmission fluid in it. I recall that it had red colored fluid in it when I bought the car in 2015.
My car is without Speed sensitive steering option as there are no electrical connection going into the steering rack.
The PS pump worked fine without any noise at all with both fluids (MB and Transmission fluid). My query is that should i changed the pump or continue to use transmission fluid in it. Some folks suggested that putting transmission fluid in PS will cause the rack to leak? Any suggestions are welcome.

Should I leave the red fluid in it without any harm to the rack or pump?

Have you looked for any collapsed bushes on the front control arms?
