Hi

Just back from a holiday and the switches on the top of the centre column are non responsive.
The Hazard Warning doesn't operate (regular indicating is ok)
And the switches either side of it are also non responsive :- ride height/sport mode/esp/towing/ etc.

I've had a look at the fuse chart on Benz world site and cannot see a fuse which may cover this (does anyone know one which may?)
I couldn't see ones covering hazard warning lights nor ABC control....

Got out the multimeter and tried all the fuses I can see (both engine bay fuse boxes, and under rear seat) and they all seen to have continuity.

Could it be a relay?- which one would have commonality?

Car runs perfectly, all other items on centre console work ok, /Comand, air con etc, Windows and seats all ok.

Car hasn't had any work done, so I'm stumped so far...could my feet have knocked a connector out?

I may be wrong but I vaguely recall all those switches are unitised i.e. there is a single switch module with them all fitted, behind the wood trim.

Does that mean I may have to remove the centre console to access the module?

It may be fortuitous as Ive wanted to add DAB, or a cable to allow me to play music off the phone, could kill 2 birds at the same time.

Next question.....is the centre console easy to remove? Are there any tricky clips liable to break?

Ah, I don't know sorry. Not had to do it yet. I know the entire trim comes off in a oner.

Is it only the radio not working. There is a fuse on the rear of it.

Hi Malcolm, the radio sat nav and air con are all fine, it is just the row of rocker switches above the Comand unit which are currently unresponsive.

Parking sensors/towing/ hazard warning lights/ sport mode/ ride height/ ESP.

I've had to go to Phoenix (currently 42degrees!!! - I may melt :) )

When I get home I shall plug the icarsoft980 in, and see if it can find the fault.

It's very easy...once you've done it before. There are a couple of you tubes on it. You will need torx screwdrivers.

Hi Craig, I've tried diagnosis with icarsoft980, the best it can do is say that N72 is not talking to the ECU......

So are the switches just sending a signal to the switch module (multiplexer?) and the module does all the work?

Can you remember if that switch module is located with the switches or is it remote?

....does anyone have one of these going spare? I assume that the W220 would use same part, or anyone can look up a part number for me I'd be grateful.

I was right, thought so. Here's the switchpack.

http://www.ebay.com/itm/CENTER-DASH...-Mercedes-W215-03-06-CL500-CL55-/140870053144

I've no idea what the switches talk to but I will presume it will be one of the SAMs. Remember the way the CANBUS works, that switch sends a message into a databus to a SAM to perform an action on some module or other. They won't be linked to one module, as you'll have switches for ABC (front left SAM), rear sun blind (rear SAM), ESP (front right SAM) and so on.

For what its worth, module N72 controls the ABC...

Weird...suspension is fine with no malfunction on dash.

I wonder if I have to get a complete new switch pack as in the above link, or will I be able to just get the 'controller' module?

Then I wonder if it would have to be coded on star or will it be plug n play?

Hi all,

I bought a switch pack off "the bay of dreams" :) and set to this morning to swap them out.

Got the centre console out, and disconnected the 2 plugs to the switches, and plugged them into the replacement switches.......still nothing working.

:( .....at least I gave all the cubbys and the ashtray a really good clean out and polished the 'wood' :)

So I left the original switches in, and replaced it all.

Does anyone know a fuse or other module which may be at fault? - or is it time to just pop it on STAR?

(Couldn't find any issues with an icarsoft980)

Hi Craig, do you happen to know where N72 is located?

That maybe just the S430, there is none in the W215 (just checked!)

http://www.carlogic.org/bg/data/MB CAN(ICC).pdf

Page 41 shows it as being in the driver's footwell.

That's a great find Craig, and on page 44 it says N72 controls the upper panel, so it looks like that is the culprit :thumb:

....now does anyone know if this module will have to be coded to my car or will it be plug n play ?

I wonder what the chances of finding one on the 'Bay is....

Hmmmmmmm anyone know a part number for an N72?

I'm guessing it's a doohickey which plugs into the X30 connector?

Is that (x30) a SAM? Or just a connector block?

(Maybe it's time to go see Terry at WG -especially if something will need coding on Star :) )

Well a HUGE "Thank You" to Terry at Wayne Gates, I was about to book it in and he came up with info on a fuse for that module.
(F26 - front left fuse box)
Bingo!

You have to respect service like that, :thumb:
