Hello guys I am about to buy new tyres for my w221, I’ve had uniroyal, Michelin, and Dunlop, all ok but striving for quieter, been a geek and researching for a month or so without any definitive answers, only FULDA which seem good, also am I best sticking with 99Y or shall I change to 103Y, will 103 extend the life of the tyre as you may be aware w221 tyres wear terrible on the inside fronts, any input would be much appreciated, thanks.

ps. Also having an alloy refurb, looking forward to the end results of that!

at 67db, Goodyear Eagle F1 Asymmetric 3, HANK K117B VENTUS S1 EVO2, Yokohama Advan Fleva V701, Dunlop SP SportMaxx all match as the quietest.

Goodyear are the best all round at B/B rated:

Falken FK510 also very quiet.
Increased load rating will usually increase noise.

That’s interesting so 103 would be noisier than the 99? And yes I have heard good things about the falken tyre, thanks.

Only if they’re cheaper...;)

MO are not like N rated for Porsche - MO just means the manufacturer paid Mercedes money to get them OE spec. They do that because they know a great many owners just replace with what was on the car.

Yes 103 will be noisier. To get the load rating higher they stiffen the sidewall which allows more noise transfer from the tread into the wheel and suspension.

Avoid Hankooks, stiff sidewalls, got them on the SLK, already changed the fronts for GY Efficientgrips - also Contis, not had good experience with them on my 968 coupe and the 16's the S204 came with. Personal preference is GY Eagle F1 Assyms if available in your size, their Efficientgrip Performance are also good.

I've just put Michelin Crossclimates on the front of the S204, slightly noisier than the GY F!'s they replaced but very little, no change in ride quality - but they're all season!

BTW - ignore MO, as long as the size and load/speed rating are suitable for your car you'll be fine!

The tyreleader.co.uk site is good for comparing EU ratings for tyres, but not necessarily the place to buy once you've decided what you want!

I had the sport Maxx rt 2 all round on my w203 c320. Great tyres, comfy, goodnwet and dry grip and very quiet. Downside; wore out quicker than average.

The old car buying adage springs to mind as an illustration. Fast. Cheap. Economical. Pick 2!

The tyre life was the one I was most happy to sacrifice to get everything else, as guess what, typically harder tyres last longer, but suffer all performance aspects to some degree.

And XL tyres have a stiffer side wall to support, er, the eXtra Load they are intended for.
