Hello team,

Been a while since I posted something up. I hope you are all keeping safe during this horrible time?

My dad old B170 (2006) is throwing up some errors on his dash:-

1. Power steering (red)
2. ESP - Visit workshop
3. Run Flats indicator unavailable
4. And now starter motor not functioning.

Any ideas?

Thanks,
Sunny

What's the battery voltage?

It's probably gonna be low right now as the car been standing still for three weeks.... but how does one find out without a voltage meter? (there's a hidden menu somewhere right?

Its in the garage at the minute , it went in yesterday but the wrong part turned up
Finding it hard to get parts delivered from Mercedes

I don't know your model, I'd use a meter - they're cheap enough. 12.6v is what you should be looking fro with engine off and >14V when engine on.

Does it start?

Good luck and keep me posted please, but don't know why the power steering would go and car won't start up any more.

@Blobcat the car battery is 11v (but the car doesn't start so I cannot check if the voltage goes up.

My W204 Coupe says 14.8 and goes up when I start him up...

11 is pretty low, do you have a booster pack or can you try jump starting it?

Battery sounds like it’s dead. 11v is way too low, and will also cause weird fault codes as sensors will be ‘seeing’ wrong voltage.

It should be 12.7 engine off.

Look at eurocarparts and try SALE60 code for discount on a new battery.
If it’s an 06, look at the age of the battery - maybe a sticker or stamped on terminals, at 5 yrs they are ready for the bin.

Check Grangemouth prices, they deliver. Or Tanya online.

Hello all,

RAC guy turned up :( and it turns out the starter motor has gone....

Even he said its too much work to be done as the engine needs to be dropped out... (why the heck did Mercedes put the engine at the bottom of the car???

:( We have done a few, its not horrendous, engine can be dropped slightly to gain access, doesn't need to be removed completely.

so much for progress my ng tf two spanner 2x 9/16 bolt 1x 7/16 nut 5 min starter out ,5 min back in .i would keel haul the P that designed drop/remove engine. and IF i had the the sense/memory i would never buy a car built in such a way . I did BUY A W168 so prob have that to look forward to. petrol can ,just be done from top, my 170cdi cant ..

.
As above ^^^ :)
I've had mine done in August 2017.

The engine position is actually a very clever safety feature, for a small car - in case of a frontal collision, it goes under the car, rather than smashing into its occupants.

I woukd be checking fuses and power supplies before condemning the starter motor. Sounds potentially like a a midi fuse has blown
