There are several very common issues with your model that could cause this, you really need a diagnositic check to be certain what is at fault.

A prelinary, check you could make is:-

Take of the cover under the bonnet drivers side, key out of car, disconect the plugs going into the engine ecu, identiyfied by the large cluster of wires entering from the front right of the box. If there are traces of oil in the plugs or in the ecu pins, then you may have big problems with oil leaking from the camshaft adjuster solinoid at the front of the engine.

Ellsy Tanners has just reminded me that if it is the oil in the harness there is a repair kit, and you will need a new O2 sensor (maybe2) we had one earlier in the week, take a look

My 54 plate CLK 270 puts up the engine warning light about once every 6 months. Then it goes of after a day or so. It's done this for 2 years. The dealer (a very good dealer - MB of Hull) says a relay is hanging in the electronics, i.e. it's a split second late opening or closing it's contacts and a new ecu would be required under warranty. Anyway, I wouldn't want the dash or ecu system disturbed since the car's otherwise perfect. the mileage is 19000, but coming out of warranty in a few months. Am I right not to disturb things?

David, like most things, they don't get better. A split second late opening or closing could turn into a second late, then sometimes not opening at all. then you being stranded 300 miles away. All this of course would happen out of the warranty period.

Hi guy,s
Been away for a month so not been able to update you anyway had car in for diagnostic's and sure enough it's the worst cam adjuster leaking so oil is in loom and has got to ECU and a couple of other sensors. Warning light has been knocked off by indie and has stayed off so far!!! Question if i have new cam adjuster and loom mod will it stay off or will i need the full work's loom, ECU, sensors etc £1000+

You do not need a new ECU that is the expensive bit, it can be washed and dried, oil is not conductive and they only replace it because MB say so

The main thing is to stop the leak, the loom should wash ok, the same as the ecu. you will need the new seal for the cam sensor.

It often the oil running into the MAF that turns the light on.

If you fancy doing this I can tell you how to wash it
