Today I did something frivolous and childish to my non Merc.
A bootlid that big was just begging for some attention.
Tomorrow is likely E220 oil change time.

That must be an XJ, how do you find it?

Absolutely divine and totally impractical is the best way to put it..... it has everything and does everything car wise, quickly, quietly and comfortably.
In the last 30 years I've had an Daimler Double Six V12, an XJ40, an X type, an XF and now this beastie.
So our family is now officially a Jaguar/daimler/benz family sort of.... due to having C240, E320, C320, E220 and son in law has C2200d.
Mercedes are lovely, solid, sensible and practical motor cars...... my XJ is pointless, useless and damned awesome to drive (no towing, no roof bars and the back seat doesn't fold down. )

Thought I'd give the UnMerc an express spruce after the last three weeks of inclement weather (still apocalyptic now) and commutes - poor thing looked like I'd been off-roading in it a few times!

I'd bought some Soft 99 shampoo to try - it's a pure shampoo with no waxes of glossy goodies in it. Watched a couple of videos recently that talked about the efficacy of quality waxes getting diminished as it effectively gets "clogged" by the additives in shampoos.

The Soft 99 stuff gives a very creamy foam and the mitt glides nicely across the paintwork. Rinsing was assisted by torrential downpour throughout, but it does indeed seem to immediately revive the Soft 99 Wax more than you get with washing with Meguiar's Gold shampoo (for example). I then gave each panel a couple of mists with Meg's Ceramic Spray Detailer and thoroughly hosed everything off, which seemed to bead even better again (I use that as a sacrificial layer).

If the wind & rain eases a bit, I'll leg it back out to get a pic, but I'd say, if you're a bit of a water-beading pervert, it's worth doing every second or third wash with a pure shampoo to revive whatever coating you've applied! (NB. This isn't one of those shampoos that strips away coatings, like Gyeon Reset or Meg's Wash Plus).

Edit: Pics added.

Today did a little to my 2"unmercs". First was to remove dash top in the Chimera as an looking for the fuel pump relay, still looking, found a loose screw in the heater controls so did it up then looked at the clutch master cylinder as it's been weeping into the footwell. Ended up removing the cylinder which is a fiddly job now looking to source a new one.

Next it was secure the coolant pipes to the new thermostat housing on the MGF then reconnect the hoses. The two bolts that secure the steel coolant pipes are right swines to get at but we managed to get them tightened up in the end. Next job is to order a cam belt kit with water pump and also check that the alternator has not seized up after being stood for nearly 6 years!!! remove RH rear wheel to access crank pulley and timing marks and remove cam belt covers once belt and water pump and renewed then it's replace the inlet manifold, got the new gaskets last Friday, that was removed to get access to the thermostat housing still need to purchase the new radiator top and bottom hoses for the MGF as have no luck finding them here have so make a order with Rimmers for the clutch master, water pump for the Chimeara and a couple of hoses that have gone a bit soft.

Slight change of plans as Rimmers wanted £100 in shipping costs so ordered from a few ebay shops and a website "temu" for the fuel pump. So now we wait 2-3 weeks for delivery.

Not riden since 2013, First wash in 12 years, it was the least I could do :)
Might even get it running, but first the crystals need removing from the fuel tank and float chambers

Yes, though I think they are both very underinflated now, it's like pushing it through sand.
The front tyre was new, got it fitted, rode it home and that's when it was last riden.
I have filled the tank with diesel and opened the fuel line to let it drip through to the carbs. The diesel should dissolve some ot the crude?

Am just sourcing new tyres for my UnMercs the Toyos on the TVR are dated 2016 and 2017 though hardly worn the fronts have started to fail suffering tread lift she has been laid up since 2018 the MGF's tyres are 2014 and she has also been laid up since 2018.Luckily I bought a spare set of wheels for the TVR the tyres on those date from 2000 so can take them and get new treads fitted which WILL NOT BE TOYOS as despite the front tyres only being a year old and covered a few thousand mile when they started shaking the steering due to the tread lift Toyos were not interested so will never buy their tyres.

Bit sad really as all the tyres have loads of tread left on them and I mean over 5mm tread depth but their grip will be severely compromised not what one wants on mid engined sports cars!

The Volvo I have has been off the road since 1998, the tyres still hold air, in the 4 years I've had it, I've top up one tyre, which had 22 pounds in it. They are perished though lol

Girlfriend was getting “check brakes” light so as it was raining I decided to take a look.

Sensor wire on pax side had broken on the connector.

IMG_5976.jpeg IMG_5977.jpeg

Soldered some wire into the pins and car wiring
IMG_5978.jpeg

All taped up and cable tied back into position. It was hanging free when I first found it - vibration will have snapped the wires.

IMG_5979.jpeg

Of course I checked the drivers side first (thought that’s where the sensor might be) - noticed rust build up on inside of the disc. Still braking well but could do with a skim or ideally I’d replace them.

Still it has just over 200k miles on and drives really well - 2.0tdi Passat estate.

Well, did it Sunday. I don't know how I've inherited the general maintenance on this car! Fiesta 2013. My partners work car as an Estate Agent. Essentially a pool car the whole office uses but really, we have it most of the week. Oil and filter change, topped up screenwash and adjusted wobbly jets that were pointing to the sky! All fluids checked and topped. It doesn't use a drop of anything between changes. Think pads need doing but I draw the line at that, I've told the gaffer! Can't begrudge doing the basics really, they pay for all the bits and essentially its a free car innit! Surprisingly easy to work on and very very reliable given the abuse it takes. Its its MOT on Monday. That will be interesting...
